Tom Collins: Candidate for District 1 Keweenaw County Commissioner

By Tom Collins  Posted 10/31/2004

Tom CollinsLAC LA BELLE -- Tom Collins is the only non-incumbent candidate running in a contested race for Keweenaw County Commissioner (District #1, two-year term). Collins, South Shore Association president and member of the Grant Township Land Use Planning Committee, which participated in a recently written and adopted County Land Use Plan,* expresses his concerns about the changes in Keweenaw County. Collins warns that without public interest and action, through planning and zoning, new large land owners, most likely from the outside, could dominate Keweenaw County at the expense of local residents.  more
*Mark Wyckoff, one of Michigan's top zoning experts, who is helping the Keweenaw County Zoning/Planning Commission update the 1975 County Zoning Ordinance -- now that the County Land Use Plan has been written and adopted -- will conduct a work session with the Z/P Commission, beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Courthouse in Eagle River. The meeting is open to the public.

By Charlotte Templin  Posted 10/07/2004

Charlotte TemplinCALUMET -- Anyone who knows Calumet sculptor Gordon Borsvold will agree with Keweenaw Now guest author and Keweenaw visitor Charlotte Templin that Borsvold is "the grand champion of recycling." The public is invited to view Borsvold's "whimsical and provocative art," which is on display through October, at the Omphale Gallery in Calumet. An Opening Reception will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8. Templin, a professor at the University of Indianapolis and author of books and articles on comedy and on other subjects, finds the wit and humor of Borsvold's art to be its great strength.  more
