Mourning Dove hunting: another viewpoint

HANCOCK
-- In a counter proposal to Copper Country Audubon's and Michigan Audubon's
position on Mourning Dove hunting, Owen Mills, a lifetime member of the Copper Country Audubon Club,
says he believes there will eventually be a dove hunt in Michigan and perhaps bird protectionists are missing an
opportunity to "build a bridge with the hunting community" that could
benefit both groups. more

HANCOCK
-- Dana Richter, Copper Country Audubon Club president, sends a letter with several reasons why the Michigan Audubon Society opposes Mourning Dove hunting. Richter notes Mourning Doves, designated as songbirds since 1905, cause no harm to agricultural crops and do not have enough meat to be a substantial food source; their call is soothing and loved by many; they play a role in the ecosystem by feeding on weed seeds and insects. The bill to hunt doves has passed the Michigan House, and it may be voted on by the State Senate at any time.
