The Finnish "Brogue" of the Copper Country

HOUGHTON -- If you wonder about the origins of that bumper sticker, "Say
yah to da UP, eh," or why Copper Country natives "make wood" and
eat "pannukakku," guest author Kathryn Remlinger, Ph.D., offers some
answers from her research on the influence of the Finnish language on the Copper
Country dialect. Remlinger will also present a Humanities Colloquium,
"Accent with an Attitude," from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb.

Indigo to present Some Like it Hot

HOUGHTON -- Guest columnist Joe Kirkish says there's a joke going around the
Calumet Theatre. "Seems the two films selected for the winter months Club
Indigo programs are ironically titled. January's film, Alice's Restaurant,
was foodless; and now the February film, coming during the coldest month of the
year, is entitled Some Like It Hot," he says in his review of the
classic comedy to be presented by the MBY music fraternity at the historic
Calumet Theatre on Friday, February 15, at 7:15 p.m. more

National Wildlife Federation questions MDEQ on Mt. Bohemia document

ANN ARBOR -- A spokesperson for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) says
Black Bear's antidegradation statement to the Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality (MDEQ) does not meet MDEQ standards for water quality. NWF
says the proposed increase in phosphorous discharge from the Mt. Bohemia septic
system to Lac La Belle is not justified by the developer's data. Read NWF's

Residents fight uphill battle to protect Lake Superior

RICHMOND, VA. -- Former Keweenaw resident Michael LaBeau says the loss of water
quality in Lake Superior is too great a risk to accept the claims of economic
benefit presented by Black Bear's antidegradation statement for Mt. Bohemia. He
says local residents face an uphill battle to protect the quality of an

because of potential pollution of Lac La Belle and Lake Superior from the septic
system recently built for the ski hill. Thiemann asks concerned Keweenaw
residents to contact the Department of Environmental Quality by the deadline
of Feb. 6 to comment on Black Bear's antidegradation statement, required for
their wastewater discharge permit. more
