Setting the record straight
Editor's Note: Hancock
City Council Member Susan Burack was interviewed by local media
(Nov. 20, 2001) concerning a
controversial sign opposing Planned Parenthood which appeared recently near the
end of the Portage Lift Bridge at the entrance to Hancock. Burack has asked us
to print this letter to inform readers of Keweenaw Now and Keweenaw
Issues (a forum to which we link our articles and where the Planned
Parenthood controversy has been discussed) that she has been
seriously misquoted in other media. She said she has also written a letter to
the editor of that media to set the record straight.
To the Editor:
It is time to set the record straight. I have been misquoted in the local media. I never said that I would attempt to prohibit the anti-Planned Parenthood message. Knowing the First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech, this is something that I would never say. There is nothing legal in restricting freedom of speech, mine or anyone’s. We ALL have the right to express our opinions. Local media does a disservice to the community with
distortion.
Sincerely,
Susan Burack, Hancock resident and City Council member
