Letter to Editor

December 27, 2002

An Open Letter to our friends and neighbors

From the Copper Country Peace Alliance

We declare our strong opposition to an attack on Iraq. Our reasons are as follows:

* Our government acting as an aggressor violates the principles of our nation.

* An attack on Iraq will intensify world hatred against the United States and make terrorist strikes more likely. War will not make us safer.

* Thousands of innocent Americans and Iraqis may die. Thousands will become refugees.

* This war will divert global resources from education, environment and health care.

Voices from across the American social and political spectrum share our concerns, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the General Board of the Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

Problems with Iraq should be resolved peacefully in cooperation with the international community.

We pray for the safety and sanctity of all life.
