Club Indigo to present Casablanca July 8
By Joe Kirkish
HOUGHTON -- Mu Beta Psi music fraternity brings the July Club Indigo to the
Calumet Theatre with the greatest romance of all times on Friday,
July 8. It's the movie everybody loves -- the movie called the most
romantic film ever seen.
Casablanca is set at the height of World War II -- a timely movie
about refugees from Europe seeking asylum in the notorious Moroccan
city. There they wait and hope for a passage to freedom. They focus
on Rick's Café américain, an equally notorious place, where deals are
made and hopes spring eternal. Into this caliginous atmosphere a
triangular love affair is played out with now familiar twists and
turns to a final satisfying result. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman
and Paul Henreid head a stellar cast with Otto Preminger at the helm
as director and producer. The movie is famous, not only for its
unusual plot and quotable dialog, but also for its memorable song, "As
Time Goes By." Something less than successful when it first came
out, the film is now relegated to the lofty classification of a "classic" by
critics and audiences of all ages.
Movie begins at 7:15 p.m. (with a vintage Loony Toon included); an all
Mediterranean buffet from the Keweenaw Co-op precedes it at 6 p.m. Cost
is $15; movie alone, $5. Children, half price. To make reservations for the
buffet, call the Calumet Theatre at 337-2610.
Casablanca is sponsored by Mu Beta Psi and the Mariner North
restaurant and motel, Copper Harbor.
