Merle Kindred: At-large candidate for Hancock City Council

HANCOCK -- As I reflect on my life in Hancock these past four years of residence and the century since my great grandparents arrived in 1900, I realize Hancock has an enviable lifestyle with its dramatic setting and heritage; excellence in educational, artistic, and recreational facilities and programs; and pride in its small town character.

Challenges include sustaining and developing both quality employment opportunities and environmental conditions crucial to the health and happiness of the community. Thoughtful development means remembering Hancock's distinctive 19th century heritage plus incorporating aspects of 21st century energy efficient, sustainable technology and lifestyle, and being mindful that we are stewards of the Earth.

I would like to serve the community as a Councilor At Large and propose to continue making Hancock a model community by seeking support for energy efficient, environmentally low-impact projects.

My background is in Education (pre-school through college level), service as a VISTA Volunteer, industrial experience, and 14 years as Business Coordinator of Garfield Kindred Associates, P.C.-Architects. I am President of Copper Country Habitat for Humanity and support the efforts of the Copper Country Peace Alliance. I am 56 years old, a graduate student at MTU, and grandmother of 10. I support the wisdom in the phrase "Think Globally, Act Locally."
