Town Crier for Lac La Belle and Copper Harbor

LAC LA BELLE -- At the June 10 Grant Township Board meeting Lonie Glieberman, Black Bear president, outlined plans for the construction of cabins at the Mt. Bohemia ski hill this summer. Snow-making equipment is a possibility, too. He also indicated he will meet with Township officials this summer to discuss the extension of Lac La Belle's Union Park to the lake. It's said that he holds an option to purchase the property.

Volunteers are needed for one hour or more to monitor the annual cleanup dumpster on June 21 and 22. Contact Gary Barker, 289-4837. Volunteers are always appreciated.

Co-manager of Lac La Belle Lodge, Roxann Smith, is a grandmother of twins. Born to daughter Roxann Baril and husband Ron, state trooper, on June 11, are Ryan Blake and Jordan Hunter. The Barils live in Stephenson, Michigan, located on US 41, north of Menominee.

Chuck Brumleve was appointed to fill the Vice President vacancy on the South Shore Association (SSA) Board. The next meeting of the association will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at the Lac La Belle firehall.

Although many snowbirds are yet to return, the Seasons Restaurant is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., except 7 p.m. Sunday closing. Weekend specials are popular.

Lac La Belle-Bete Grise ladies meet every Wednesday from noon until 3 p.m. to quilt or work on other personal projects. It's an opportunity to meet neighbors and make friends. Newcomers are welcome.

Freda Looker turned over the ownership and management of nearby Haven Falls Red Sands Resort to her daughter Betty Valley and husband Rick. Freda remains here this summer, enjoying her retirement.

There were ninety-eight registrants at the 2nd Annual Lac La Belle Walleye/Pike Tournament on June 7, compared to 74 last year. The Currel/Gatzke team won the $1,000 walleye prize. The Lloyd/Stout team won in the pike category. For $100 prizes, Daryle Mace bagged the largest pike-13 lbs., 8 oz. Mark Butke weighed in an 8 lb., 3 oz. walleye. Other $500 to $75 cash prizes were awarded.

The Delaware Mine has added two llamas and a new third resort dog for visitors to enjoy, along with two deer, a rabbit and skunk. Train and antique mining equipment also attract attention. The tour of the old copper mine shaft is an unforgettable experience.

If you'd like to be a fireman, there are openings on the Lac La Belle Volunteer Fire Department.

COPPER HARBOR -- After touring the Keweenaw area on June 22, Mark Wycoff of the Planning & Zoning Center, Inc., of Lansing, will conduct a seminar on Planning, Zoning and Subdivision Control for Grant Township Board members and interested community residents from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, June 23, at the Copper Harbor Visitors Center. Also on June 23, Wycoff will conduct a Planning and Zoning Training Program for local government officials and invited guests at the Mariner North. The session will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with refreshments at 6 p.m. for $6.50. Suggested by Grant Township Supervisor Richard Powers, the program is sponsored by the County Board of Commissioners.

The Conservation Fund has agreed to support Grant Township for the proposed acquisition of Copper Harbor's Hunter's Point. Their help will include assistance with purchase negotiations and fund bridging. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund invited Grant Township Supervisor Richard Powers to make a presentation on the Hunter's Point acquisition in Gaylord on June 18.

For Hunter's Point fund raising, The Copper Harbor Improvement Association will hold a "Treasure" Rummage Sale on July 25 and 26. Donated old or new, ancient or antique unwanted but useable items are appreciated. Anything goes, but, please, no clothing, mattresses or junk. Drop items off at the Visitors Center between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on July 14, 16 and 18. Items may also be dropped off between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. or between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. July 20 to July 24.

A reunion of former Copper Harbor students will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, at the Visitors Center. George Nousenan, whose father taught at the school, will be the Master of Ceremonies.

Welcome to two new Copper Harbor businesses: Grandpa's Barn, located at 371 Fourth Street, south of US 41 (on the road between the Minnetonka Resort and the Copper Harbor--Grant Township School) displays the late Jim Wescoat's collection of historic memorabilia and sells books of natural history and with a local flair…..Gizmos and Gadgets, selling items their name implies, now occupies the former Johnson's Bakery building on Gratiot Street, across from the Pines Resort.
