Don Keith, Keweenaw County Commissioner

Points of View
Don Keith, Keweenaw County Commissioner

June 1, 2002

To Residents of Keweenaw County:

I have a vision of what Keweenaw County can be. With patience and perseverance, our goals are being achieved. It is with humble satisfaction that I list some of the important achievements of the last 18 months.

  • The formation of grass-rooted land-use planning committees in our Townships.
  • Ownership of the Gratiot River land for public recreation with no County tax money spent.
  • A new enhanced 911 system soon to be on-line at no additional cost to taxpayers.
  • Appointment of two ladies to the previously all-male Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • Long overdue, meaningful and earned pay increases for law enforcement personnel.
  • Opening all County Board meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • A new roadside park at the mouth of the Tobacco River in Sherman Township.
  • M-DOT grant to plan and designate US 41 a scenic, historic highway from Mohawk north.
  • Emergency back-up generator for our Sheriff's Department, adding safety for all. Your money well spent!
  • Requiring a hard copy of all building permits to be filed at our Courthouse and requiring that Township Boards be informed.
  • Increased awareness of needed zoning up-date and enforcement.
I continue working to earn your trust. Again, I pledge honor, respect and dignity in service to the people of Keweenaw County. I will work to promote communication and understanding between County officials and our Township Boards. I acknowledge and accept responsibility for the financial soundness of Keweenaw County.

Sincerely,

Don B. Keith
