Park Superintendent to retire

CALUMET
-- Frank C. Fiala, Superintendent of Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) since April, 1997, will
retire on January 3, 2007, after nearly 32 years of Federal service. Fiala’s assignments
during his National Park Service career have included park ranger and management positions
at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in Alaska, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and
Preserve in Alaska, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, Carlsbad Caverns National Park
in New Mexico and Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado. Fiala also served as a medic in
the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1973. Fiala and his wife Emily plan to remain in the Copper Country and continue their involvement
in a wide range of activities.
Democrats open new headquarters in Hancock Posted

HANCOCK -- Houghton County Democrats are opening a new headquarters on the
first floor of Hancock's
old Hotel Scott, known also as the Scott Hotel. The building is being
renovated by owner Mike Lahti, Houghton County Board chair and candidate for
Michigan 110th District state representative. The Democrats will host an Open House in their new headquarters from 10 a.m. to
Noon on Saturday, Sept. 30. The event is free and open to the public. The Houghton County Democratic Party recommends a NO vote on Michigan Proposal 06-2 ("Civil
Rights Initiative") and a YES vote on Houghton County Proposal A (0.1 mill for
