Trekkers for clean water scheduled to reach Lake Michigan Aug. 30

Canoeing along the shores of Lake Michigamme, Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition members join trekkers heading into Michigamme on Aug. 17, 2005.MARQUETTE -- Trekkers for Connecting Water - Connecting People will soon reach their destination after traveling from Lake Superior to Lake Michigan in order to highlight the threats metallic sulfide mining poses on Great Lakes Waters. On August 30th, Rob Cadmus and Jackie Camelet -- who have kayaked, canoed and hiked nearly 300 miles -- are expected to arrive on the shores of Lake Michigan near Menominee. The trekkers will host a closing ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30 in Menominee at the Marina Bandshell. The public is welcome to come and talk to locals and experts about metallic sulfide mining, to have some food and to listen to music. more

Stupak testifies on water withdrawal

U. S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D- MenomineeWASHINGTON, D. C. -- Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) testified before the Council of Great Lakes Governors at a recent public hearing on the current draft of the Annex 2001 Implementing Agreements, which, if enacted, will become the common standard for Great Lakes water diversion. Stupak urged the eight Great Lakes Governors and two Canadian Premiers to adopt several alterations to the agreements to ensure our Great Lakes are preserved and protected for generations to come. Citizens may submit comments on the drafts until Aug. 29, 2005. more

(Photo by Michele Anderson)EAGLE RIVER -- Keweenaw County residents filled the Courthouse in Eagle River on Wednesday, Aug. 17, to hear Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm share her vision of the state's future. Creating jobs and higher education opportunities, protecting the Great Lakes and promoting tourism were some of the topics Granholm discussed in her informal presentation and question-answer session. The Governor spent a good deal of the approximately 90-minute visit greeting individuals of all ages and listening to their concerns. Trekkers connect Michigan waters to highlight sulfide mining threats

(Photo © 2005 and courtesy Northwoods Wilderness Recovery)MARQUETTE -- Connecting Water - Connecting People (CWCP) -- a trek from Lake Superior to Lake Michigan to highlight the threats metallic sulfide mining poses to Great Lakes waters -- began on Aug. 6 in Marquette and continues through Aug. 30, when trekkers will arrive in Menominee for a Closing Rally. The group camped last weekend at the proposed Yellow Dog mine site, touring the Yellow Dog Plains and the headwaters of the Salmon-Trout River. They will camp at Michigamme on Aug. 17 and canoe down the Michigamme River to Republic on Aug. 18. The public is invited to join in the activities scheduled along the route. The Concerned Citizens of Marquette County will host a Facts Fair on the sulfide mining issue from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Holiday Inn of Marquette. more
