Last day for voter registration: Monday, Oct. 4

HOUGHTON -- Monday, Oct. 4, is the last day to register in order to vote in the coming November 2, 2004, general election for national, state and local officials. The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country provides information on voter registration on their Web site. They also list the offices and phone numbers of township, city and village clerks for Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties. Residents may contact these offices for additional voter information. more

Obituary: Toni Ellen Tikkanen

Photo by Patricia Oakes.CALUMET -- Toni Tikkanen died peacefully at her home near Calumet on September 20, 2004, after eight years of living courageously and vibrantly with breast cancer. Toni’s passions throughout her life were music and dancing. An accomplished folk musician, Toni  played the guitar, banjo, accordion and piano and also sang in English, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and several Balkan languages. With her husband, Oren, she played in the Thimbleberry Band, the Thimbleberry Hi-Liters, Will Kilpela and Friends and the Finn Hall Band. A graceful and skilled folk dancer and teacher, Toni was a long-time member of the Copper Country Folk Dance Club and founder of the Northern Lights Folk Dance group in Crystal Falls. Toni had a life-time commitment to peace and social justice issues. more
