Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes: Aug. 3, 2004

MARQUETTE -- The Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee (KPAC) will hold its next regular meeting, open to the public, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, in the Allouez Township Community Center in Allouez. KPAC was assembled to provide recreation and resource management suggestions to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) on the state's recent Keweenaw Tip purchase of 6,275 acres for public access, recreation and conservation. The Committee is expected to submit recommendations to the MDNR this September. KPAC met on Aug. 3 and Aug. 17 and approved recommendations on non-motorized trails, minimum impact zones and forest management. Discussion, with input from the public, is continuing on such issues as motorized trails, day use and camping areas. Read the minutes of the Aug. 3, 2004, meeting.

Pasty.com honors photographer Dan Urbanski, 1954-2004

(Photo © 2004  and courtesy Pasty Central)CALUMET -- Upper Peninsula photographer Dan Urbanski, 50, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 13, 2004, after a long illness. Some of his beautiful photos are being featured this week on the Pasty Cam. Keweenaw Now wishes to express our deepest sympathy to Dan's family and our appreciation for the photos Dan and Charlie Hopper, through the Pasty Cam, shared with us. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 22, at the AmericInn Superior View Restaurant (Paul's) in Silver City. Read tributes to Dan on the Pasty Cam.

Houghton County Democrats choose delegates

HANCOCK -- At their Aug. 14 convention in Hancock, Houghton County Democrats chose delegates and alternate delegates to represent Houghton County at the Michigan Democratic Party convention Aug. 28 and 29 in Detroit. They also approved several resolutions to be sent to the state party for consideration. The Democrats will hold their monthly discussion, including a second orientation for their "Get Out the Vote" campaign, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton.  more
