Keweenaw Point Committee tour with DNR leads to recommendations

(Photo © 2004 Dana Richter)ALLOUEZ, COPPER HARBOR -- High Rock Bay, Fish Cove, Schlatter's Lake, the Mouth of the Montreal, Hoar Lake and the Mandan Road have greater meaning now for the Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee (KPAC) members who toured the area with Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) personnel on June 12, 2004. This opportunity for on-site discussion of roads and trails, potential and actual campsites, future parking areas and protection of minimum impact areas led to the committee's first official recommendations  to the DNR during their July 6 meeting in Allouez. KPAC will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, in the Mohawk School gymnasium. more

Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee to meet Aug. 3 in Mohawk; KPAC Minutes: July 6, 2004

(Photo by Michele Anderson)MARQUETTE -- The Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee (KPAC) will hold its next regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Mohawk School gymnasium, 3rd Street, in Mohawk. KPAC was assembled to provide recreation and resource management suggestions to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) on the state's recent Keweenaw Tip purchase of 6,275 acres for public access, recreation and conservation. The Committee is expected to submit recommendations to the MDNR this September. Read the minutes of the July 6, 2004, meeting.

Peaceful protests greet Bush in Marquette

Stupak: President Bush should explain failed policies

U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee)WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) said he's glad President Bush will visit northern Michigan, but called on the President to make it more than just a pep rally. Stupak said the people of northern Michigan deserve answers regarding the failed policies of this Administration. more

Hancock accepting nominations for City Council offices until Aug. 3

HANCOCK -- The City of Hancock is accepting nominations for persons desiring to qualify as candidates for the Office of Council - (1) one Councilor from Ward I, (1) Councilor from Ward II and (1) from Ward III for a four-year term on a non-partisan (Nov. 2, 2004) ballot. Nominating petitions, available at the City Clerk's Office between the hours of 8 a.m. to Noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (M-F), will be accepted until 4 p.m. local time, Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004. Read the official Notice.
Editor's Note: This month the Hancock City Council meets on Wednesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 21, in City Hall, 399 Quincy St. The Work Session begins at 6:30 p.m., and the regular meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
