Keweenaw Chain Drive draws nearly 200 mountain bikers plus kids

Updated 06/28/04 Posted 06/25/2004

HANCOCK,
HOUGHTON -- Nearly 200 mountain bikers streamed across the Portage Lift Bridge on Saturday, June 19, on their way to the Maasto Hiihto/Churning
Rapids trail system for the Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival 16- and 32-mile races
for men and women ages 14 and up. On Sunday, at the Michigan Tech Trails, racers
met the challenges of the Technical Time Trials -- including the high jump
designed by Nelson Sommerfeldt and Tony Schwenn of Copper Harbor. Father's Day
at the races was a family affair as dads, moms and grandparents cheered for the
under-14 racers at the Junior Chain Drive. Keweenaw Now presents three
pages of photos, including highlights of the events captured by several guest photographers.

Posted 06/17/2004

HANCOCK --
Whether it is a beach scene in watercolor pencil or a sculpture made with Lake Superior sand, the work of Calumet artist Rebecca Koivu is representative of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Hancock's Turquoise Gallery is hosting a selection of Koivu's work in the exhibit, "A Story of Keweenaw."
Sevil Soyer, Gallery co-owner and artist, said she discovered these works during a
visit to Koivu's home and was impressed by the quality of the art: "everything in the correct balance -- light and dark, perspective and color -- really, really correct."
