Stupak urges President to fire Defense Secretary, calls for investigation of private contractors in Iraq

 U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee)WASHINGTON, D. C. -- United States Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) has called for President Bush to fire Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for failing to act upon reports of the disgusting photographs and inhumane treatment of Iraqi prisoners. Stupak also called for Congress to hold hearings into the role private contractors may have had in the incidents. In addition, in a letter sent to the Department of Justice last week, Stupak and 28 other members of Congress asked the Attorney General to investigate those contractors. more

MTU to honor Dean of Copper Country Airwaves for service

 News broadcaster Richard Tuisku (Dick Storm) (Photo courtesy MTU)HOUGHTON -- Richard Tuisku, better known as Dick Storm to his many listeners, will receive Michigan Technological University's Distinguished Service Award at spring commencement ceremonies May 8, 2004. A native of Toivola, Tuisku has been broadcasting in the Keweenaw since 1964. He has received numerous awards for news, public affairs and public service. In 1994, he co-founded Tu-Mar Broadcasting, which owns radio stations WOLV-FM, WCCY-AM and WHKB-FM. A noted local country musician and singer, Tuisku also hosts a popular country oldies program called "The K-Bear Hall of Fame." more

 KPAC members review materials distributed to them during their Apr. 6, 2004, meeting in the Allouez Township Community Center in Allouez.MARQUETTE -- The next meeting of the Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee (KPAC) will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Allouez Community Center in Allouez. KPAC is working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to plan management of the state's recent Keweenaw Tip purchase of 6,275 acres for conservation, public access and recreation. Read the minutes of the Apr. 6, 2004, KPAC meeting in Allouez.
