Gov. Granholm not in favor of potential Kennecott mine on Yellow Dog Plains

Posted 04/18/2004

Michigan Governor Jennifer GranholmMARQUETTE -- An article in Marquette's Mining Journal of Friday, Apr. 16, reported, "Gov. Jennifer Granholm indicated she is leaning toward not supporting Kennecott Mining Co.'s possible plans for a mine in the Yellow Dog Plains area of the Upper Peninsula." The article noted Granholm agreed with U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) that the advantages of such a mine (targeting sulfide ores for nickel and copper) do not balance with the environmental risks (potential acid rock drainage that could contaminate groundwater and surface water with acids and dissolved metals). Granholm noted that while environmental concerns must be balanced with business opportunity, "jobs at such a mine may not last more than five to 10 years." Read the article in the Mining Journal Archives for Friday, Apr. 16, 2004.
