Good Times Music store supports local musicians

Posted 04/26/2004

HOUGHTON -- If you're wondering where you can find CDs by local musicians, a
new guitar, stringed instrument repair or even instruction in string and
wind instruments, try the new Good Times Music store at 506 Shelden Avenue in
Houghton. Proprietor Susie Landers supports local musicians and recording
artists as well as offering a wide variety of music products. Good Times rolled onto the local music scene early this month with a
festive grand opening that featured a live bluegrass performance by The Mountain Echo Band, including young Kelly Suvanto on fiddle.

Gov. Granholm not in favor of potential Kennecott mine on Yellow Dog Plains

Posted 04/18/2004

MARQUETTE -- An article in Marquette's
Mining Journal of Friday, Apr. 16, reported, "Gov. Jennifer Granholm
indicated she is leaning toward not supporting Kennecott Mining Co.'s possible plans for a mine in the Yellow Dog Plains area of the Upper Peninsula." The article noted Granholm agreed with U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) that the advantages of such a mine
(targeting sulfide ores for nickel and copper) do not balance with the environmental
risks (potential acid rock drainage that could contaminate groundwater and
surface water with acids and dissolved metals). Granholm noted that while
environmental concerns must be balanced with business opportunity, "jobs at
such a mine may not last more than five to 10 years." Read the
article in the Mining Journal Archives for Friday, Apr. 16, 2004.
