Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District to hold 2004 Tree Sale

 Tree sale collage courtesy Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District.HOUGHTON -- This Thursday, April 1, is the deadline for ordering plants through the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District's (HKCD) annual Tree Sale scheduled for May 7 and 8 at the Houghton County Arena, 1500 Birch Street, Hancock. HKCD is now taking orders for such items as Conifers for Reforestation;  Trees and Shrubs for Wildlife; Blackberry, Blueberry, Raspberry and Strawberry Bushes; Apple, Cherry, Peach and Plum Trees; Native Wildflower Seed Packets and Native Wildflower Plants. HKCD will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 30, at the UPPCO Building in Houghton. more

Obituary: Allouez Township's Bill Luokkanen

 Bill LuokkanenMOHAWK -- William (Bill) Edward Luokkanen, 58, of Mohawk passed away on Friday, March 26, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to his family, Bill will also be fondly remembered as a trusted friend, a hardworking and caring person who touched the lives of many people over the course of his life. At the time of his death, Bill w as Supervisor of Allouez Township. He was responsible for many achievements and improvements for the people of the township he genuinely loved and was proud to serve. The funeral service for Mr. Luokkanen will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Mar. 31, in the Peterson Funeral Home, Calumet, with Paul Isaacson officiating. Spring burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek. Friends may call from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Peterson Funeral Home. The American Legion Post 230 of Mohawk will conduct their service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. more

Copper Country, Marquette peace groups commemorate year of war on Iraq

March 20, 2004, Peace Walk participants hold tightly to flags and signs in the wind. HOUGHTON-HANCOCK, MARQUETTE -- High winds on the Portage Lift Bridge did not discourage about 30 local community members from their Walk for Peace from Houghton to Hancock and back on Saturday, Mar. 20, in commemoration of American and Iraqi lives lost over the past year, and in solidarity with peace action around the world. On the same cold, windy day in Marquette, about 40 citizens gathered for a rally in front of the Marquette Post Office, followed by a march to Washington Street Park, where the names of 567 U.S. soldiers who have died in Iraq were called in front of the Veterans' Memorial. more

Stupak Votes NO on budget that puts U.S. deeper in red

U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday night, Mar. 25, passed the $2.4 trillion Republican Budget Resolution that expands the $531 billion deficit with new tax cuts while shortchanging small business, education, healthcare and veterans' health benefits. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) voted against the budget blueprint, saying it fails to address the deficit which is projected to reach $2 trillion in ten years. more

Coyotes spotted near Eagle River

(Photo by Mike Dudenas)EAGLE RIVER -- Mike Dudenas, Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club vice-president and one of the club's deer feeders in Eagle River, wondered why the deer were acting so spooky on Saturday morning, March 6. Then he spotted two coyotes about 150 yards from shore at the edge of the Lake Superior ice pack. The deer walked by as he was trying to photograph the coyotes. Copper Country Ski Tigers score high in Midwest races

(Photo © 2004 Kaye Helminen and courtesy Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club)CALUMET -- With winning scores in recent Midwest cross-country competitions, the Copper Country Ski Tigers are ready to hit Calumet's Swedetown Trails for the Junior Bear Chase on Saturday, March 6. Several Ski Tigers won awards in both the Feb. 20 Junior Birkie in Hayward, Wis., and the Michigan High School Cross-Country Ski Championships, sponsored by the Ski Tigers, at the Michigan Tech Trails Feb. 14-15. In addition, three young local skiers -- Amber Young, Keith Helminen and Karen Jarvey -- have qualified for the Junior Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Ski Tigers group also offers parents opportunities for volunteering and skiing. more
