HANCOCK -- Vandals apparently broke into the Maasto Hiihto Chalet and stole some candy bars and an undetermined amount of cash collected by the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club for snacks. Pam Schmidt of the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Math and Environmental Education, who was leading a snowshoe expedition of elementary school children at Maasto Hiihto the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 18, discovered some damage to doors as evidence of the break-in. The building has since been secured, and money will no longer be kept on the premises. Hancock police are investigating the incident. more

Kerry first choice in Michigan, local caucuses

Posted 02/08/2004

HOUGHTON, MOHAWK -- Voters in Houghton and Keweenaw counties followed a statewide trend in giving U.S. Senator John Kerry the highest number of votes in the Feb. 7 Michigan Democratic caucuses. In Houghton County, Janet Metsa, Democratic Party chair, reported these results of 316 on-site ballots cast: Kerry, 164; Dean, 63; Edwards, 47; Clark, 21; Kucinich, 9; Sharpton, 3; Gephardt, 2; Uncommittee, 4. In Keweenaw County, 31 on-site votes yielded these results: Kerry, 15; Dean, 8; Edwards, 4; Kucinich, 3; Clark, 1. These on-site tallies do not include Internet or absentee ballots. Jacquie Jaaskelainen, Keweenaw County Democratic Party chair, said more people than usual (a mixed group of young and old) turned out because of the early caucus date. In previous years the caucus was always late and "a done deal" before Michigan Democrats had a chance to vote, she noted.
The Detroit Free Press reported the statewide Democratic caucus turnout -- about 150,000 -- fell short of original estimates of  400,000 voters. Read the article. Link to another Web site.

The township received word recently that their project -- acquisition of about 200 acres including Seneca Lake from International Paper/Lake Superior Land Co. -- is one of eight state and 19 local land acquisition projects totaling $18 million and recommended for funding by the MNRTF Board of Trustees in December 2003. If funded, the land acquisition would be the first step toward creating a picnic area and non-motorized hiking trails near the lake. more
