MTU to hold Mars Watch 2003 Wednesday, Aug. 27

HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech plans to hold Mars Watch 2003 from 9:30 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in the commons area between Fisher Hall and the Walker Arts and Humanities Center. On this date, Mars and Earth will pass closer together than they have in the past 50,000 years, making the red planet appear unusually large and bright in the night sky. Several small telescopes, binoculars and local astronomers will be present to help see the unusual spectacle. The public is invited. more Link to another Web site.

Governor Jennifer Granholm tours Calumet's "Main Street"

(Photo by Michele Anderson)CALUMET -- Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm began her Aug. 20 visit to the Copper Country with a walking tour of Calumet's "Main Street" district (Fifth and Sixth streets) greeting local residents and officials and learning about Calumet Village and Calumet Township concerns for historic preservation and rehabilitation of buildings. Calumet recently received the Michigan Main Street Program designation, a downtown revitalization program that offers assistance in strategies for creating jobs and stimulating investment in downtown communities. Granholm is visiting the Western Upper Peninsula communities of Bessemer, Ironwood and Ontonagon on Thursday, Aug. 21. more

Isle Royale National Park accepting public comments on Fire Management Planning

Isle Royale (Photo courtesy Isle Royale National Park)HOUGHTON -- Isle Royale National Park is accepting public comments on a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Fire Management Plan (FMP) to replace the plan approved in September 1992 and set the direction for the park's Fire Management Program for the next five to 10 years. National Park Service policy requires periodic updating of the park's FMP. Written comments should be postmarked no later than Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, and  addressed to: Superintendent, Isle Royale National Park, 800 East Lakeshore Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931. Copies of the EA and FMP can be found at Park Headquarters in Houghton and at Mott Island on Isle Royale. Rich Brown's District Newsletter available online

State Rep. Rich Brown (D-Bessemer)LANSING -- State Rep. Rich Brown (D- Bessemer) has posted his Summer 2003 District Newsletter online. Since all individual House District office budgets were reduced to deal with Michigan's deficit, Brown said, there is not enough funding to mail the usual newsletter to all residents in the 110th District. However, it is now online along with all of Rep. Brown's previous newsletters, press releases and other publications. To view the newsletter, visit Rep. Brown's Web site.
