Volunteers beautify Hancock with gardens

Guest writer Bill Sewell, who volunteers with the group on Saturday mornings, describes how volunteers -- both children and adults -- are planting flowers and maintaining gardens on White Street and Pine Street. Nancy Carr of Carr Landscaping and Design, who supervises the group, volunteers her own time and materials to this Beautification Project, initiated by Hancock Mayor Jim Martin. more

Lance Armstrong wins fifth Tour de France

PARIS, FRANCE -- Lance Armstrong has won his fifth Tour de France championship -- winning the 100th Tour de France (the famous cycling race begun in 1903) on Sunday, July 27, 2003. LE TOUR Web site reports: "Armstrong joins Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain; an exclusive collective with five titles each. And while he is bound to celebrate that victory tonight, it’s likely that his preparation for a sixth title will begin tomorrow."  Read about the race, listen to commentary and view photos and video on either the French or the English version of the Web site canal LE TOUR. TNC rep to address South Shore Association July 26

Beach at Bete Grise South (File photo by Michele Anderson)LAC LA BELLE -- Jeff Knoop, Western Upper Peninsula director of land protection for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Michigan Chapter, will speak at the South Shore Association meeting at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 26, in Lac La Belle. He will discuss TNC's fundraising effort to purchase about 1,103 acres -- including 7,500 feet of Lake Superior shoreline and approximately 800 acres of wetland -- at Bete Grise South, near Lac La Belle. If successful, the purchase will protect diverse wetland types, including an outstanding Great Lakes coastal plain marsh community and associated dune/swale wetland complex. The meeting will be held in the Lac La Belle (Grant Township) Fire Hall and is open to the public. Read also highlights of the June 28 SSA meeting. more

Motherlode Coffee House re-opens, seeks musicians

(Photo by Michele Anderson)HOUGHTON -- Coffee lovers are again flocking to the Motherlode Coffee House, 52 Huron St., Houghton, since it re-opened July 1. New co-owners Bill Rosemurgy III and Susan Roth are planning a grand opening in the near future. "We're also looking for musicians -- anyone who wants to play," Rosemurgy said. The Motherlode is now open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For information call 487-JAVA (487-5282) or email motherlode@charter.net.
