Conservancy plans purchase of Gratiot River North

John Griffith and Glen Tolksdorf announce land purchase agreement at Jan. 29 DEQ hearing in Mohawk School. MOHAWK -- A permit application to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for a bridge to access private land near the mouth of the Gratiot River in Allouez Township may be unnecessary if a purchase agreement between  North Woods Conservancy (NWC) and Section 12 landowners is finalized in the next month as planned. During the DEQ's Jan. 29 public hearing on the application at the Mohawk School, NWC President John Griffith and Glen Tolksdorf, representing the landowners, announced their agreement on a $1.7 million sale of the land to NWC. The acreage is adjacent to the recent Keweenaw County land purchase for a county park at the mouth of the river. more

DEQ to hold public hearing Jan. 29 on proposed Gratiot River bridge

(File photo by John Griffith) LANSING -- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Geological and Land Management Division, will hold a public hearing on a permit for the proposed Gratiot River bridge at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the CLK Early Childhood Center (Mohawk School) in Mohawk. Any written comments to be submitted for the public hearing record must be received at the DEQ Geological and Land Management Division, 1420 U.S. 2 West, Crystal Falls, MI 49220, on or before Feb. 8, 2003. Read the Notice of Public Hearing. The Keweenaw Liberty Library has new postings on the Gratiot River Project. These include flood flow reviews of Glen Tolksdorf's Gratiot River bridge project and his nearby Hills Creek bridge project. Keweenaw County Board names new Zoning/Planning commissioners

Janet Shea of Eagle Harbor Township EAGLE RIVER -- The need for geographic balance and a recent clarification of voting rules led the County Board of Commissioners to increase the number of Zoning/Planning board members by one and to appoint two new members -- Janet Shea and Richard Probst, Jr., both of Eagle Harbor Township -- in addition to five returning appointees. Newly elected County Commissioner Clyde Wescoat of Copper Harbor was also sworn in during the County Board's Jan. 8 meeting. more 

Keweenaw County residents may apply to serve on Zoning/Planning Commission, ZBA

Zoning/Planning Commission members discuss potential new members at their Dec. 17, 2002, meeting in the Courthouse in Eagle River. EAGLE RIVER -- The Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the Keweenaw County Zoning and Planning Commission (to fill three vacancies) and the Zoning Board of Appeals (one vacancy). Applications can be sent to the Keweenaw County Clerk's Office, HC 1 Box 607, Eagle River, MI 49950. The Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Courthouse in Eagle River.

Jennifer Granholm inaugurated as Michigan's first woman governor

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm LANSING -- Taking the oath of office in Lansing on Wednesday morning, Jan. 1, Jennifer Granholm became the first woman governor of Michigan. In her inaugural address Granholm noted, "Citizenship in a democracy is not a spectator sport, especially, especially in times as tough as we are in." She also challenged young people to lead the way: "You, my young friends, hold in your hands the power to change the world.
