DEQ to hold public hearing Jan. 29 on proposed Gratiot River bridge

(File photo by John Griffith) LANSING -- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Geological and Land Management Division, will hold a public hearing on a permit for the proposed Gratiot River bridge at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2003, at the CLK Early Childhood Center (Mohawk School) in Mohawk. Any written comments to be submitted for the public hearing record must be received at this Division's office, 1420 U.S. 2 West, Crystal Falls, MI 49220, on or before the close of the hearing record (10 days after the public hearing). Toys for Keweenaw families fill Courtroom in Eagle River

Toys collected by Sheriiff's Department await distribution to Keweenaw families. EAGLE RIVER -- Toys collected for Keweenaw County Sheriff Ron Lahti's "No Kid Without a Toy for Christmas" drive fill more than half of the courtroom at the Keweenaw County Courthouse as the drive nears its last day, Dec. 21. Keweenaw donations will all go to help Keweenaw County families. Donors may still drop off toys at the Sheriff's Department in Eagle River or at Slim's Café in Mohawk. Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean is also accepting toys for the drive. Drop-off locations are the Sheriff's Department on Houghton Ave., Wal-Mart in Houghton and Pamida in Calumet. more

Omega House to provide home for terminally ill hospice patients

Omega House logo HOUGHTON -- The capital campaign is underway to raise another $500,000 for the million-dollar Omega House, a six-bed hospice house planned to provide a homelike setting for dying Copper Country residents who are unable to stay in their own homes. Omega House will allow family and friends to support the dying person through visits and short stays, while professional and volunteer caregivers address the patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The facility will serve Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon counties. more
