U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota dies in plane crash

EVELETH, MINN. -- U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, impassioned Democratic champion of the people, died Friday morning, Oct. 25, when his plane crashed in woods in northeastern Minnesota. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports all eight people aboard the plane were killed, including Wellstone's wife, Sheila Wellstone, 58, and their daughter, Marcia Markuson, 33. Sen. Wellstone, 58, was on his way to attend a funeral when the plane went down about 10:22 a.m. in light snow about 1 1/2 to 2 miles from the Eveleth airport, about 175 miles north of the Twin Cities.

Citizens Opposed to War
with Iraq walk for peace, plan Forum

HOUGHTON -- On Saturday, Oct. 12, about 30 local
community members, including families with children, walked in the rain from
Houghton to Hancock and back to demonstrate opposition to the recent
Congressional vote giving President Bush authority to wage war on
Iraq. Sponsors of the walk, Copper Country Citizens Opposed to War with Iraq
will hold a Campus Forum on Iraq at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Fisher 139 on
the Michigan Tech campus. more
Stupak addresses House on Iraq Resolutions

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, addressed the United States House of Representatives on the proposed resolutions authorizing the
use of military action against Iraq, Wednesday evening, Oct. 9, 2002. Stupak
said he received nearly 900 communications opposed to the United States acting unilaterally against Iraq and approximately 16
communications in support of the President's position. more

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, has posted on his Web site a copy of a proposed Joint Resolution to authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq. The resolution was released on Wednesday, Oct. 2, after consultation between House leadership and President Bush. Stupak invites U.P. residents to review the Resolution and send him their comments. more
