MTU Forestry Center to offer outdoor learning for teachers May 3-4

HOUGHTON -- A group of 70 educators from throughout the upper and lower
peninsulas of Michigan will attend an outdoor learning workshop for K-12
teachers on Friday-Saturday, May 3-4, 2002, in Michigan Tech University's Ford
Forestry Center, located eight miles south of L'Anse. Participants will enjoy
geologic tours, learn recreation techniques and stream monitoring, hike Canyon
Falls and discover Keweenaw birds butterflies. more

HOUGHTON
-- The third "Preserving Family History" meeting will be held at 7
p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 25, at the Calumet Public Library. "Collection and
Storage of Clothing and Antiques" will be presented by Larry Lankton,
Michigan Tech University professor of social sciences, and Tom Baker of Keweenaw
National Historical Park (KNHP). Guest writer Katie Alvord describes the
first two sessions of the series sponsored by KNHP and the MTU Archives and

MTU students help plan bridge restoration in Eagle River

EAGLE
RIVER -- Michigan Technological University’s Civil Engineering Senior Design
Group has been assisting Eagle River resident Jim Vivian III in planning
restoration of the Pratt Pony Bridge in Eagle River, near Lake Superior. The
historic bridge has been closed by the Keweenaw County Road Commission for the
past three years because of the dangerous decay of the concrete deck. more
Earth Day report shows sweeping attack on environment, health at federal agencies

LANSING -- Key Bush administration agencies have been quietly carrying out a
coordinated attack on numerous environmental safeguards, according to
environmental and public interest groups in a new report released on Earth Day,
April 22, 2002, by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Save Our
Environment, a coalition of leading environmental organizations, is conducting a
national public education campaign in observance of the 32nd annual Earth Day. more
IP, Conservation Fund to offer awards

joined together to offer two National Honor awards -- each including a $10,000
cash grant. Nominations are due April 26, 2002, for the Environmental Education

vote defeats Arctic drilling

DETROIT
-- United States Senators voted 54 to 46 on Thursday, April 18, to defeat an
amendment to the energy bill that would have opened the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge in Alaska to oil drilling. The Wilderness Society Web site provides

Senate to decide soon on Arctic drilling

DETROIT -- The U.S. Senate may soon decide which way the nation goes on the
issue of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In an April 17
editorial The Detroit Free Press asks Michigan senators not to succumb to
the pro-drilling faction's inducements that have nothing to do with energy
policy -- such as government help with steelworkers' benefits.

Scientists to Bush: National Forests need protection, not logging

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In an April 16 letter to President Bush, more than 200 U. S.
scientists, including two from Michigan, urged the President to end commercial
logging of National Forests and renew the Forest Service's original vision of
forest protection. Dr. Jiquan Chen of Michigan Technological University's School
of Forestry and Wood Products and Dr. Jeff Conner of the Michigan State
University Kellogg Biological Station are among the signatories to the letter,
released by Sierra Club, National Forest Protection Alliance (NFPA) and U. S.
Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).

Keweenaw County to hold public hearings on residential zoning issues

EAGLE
RIVER -- Definitions of "tourist homes" and "roadside
stands" in Resort Residential zoning districts will be the subject of a
public hearing by the Keweenaw County Zoning Board of Appeals at 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, Apr. 30, at the Courthouse in Eagle River. Two other public hearings on
residential zoning issues will also precede the 7 p.m. Zoning/Planning
Commission Meeting on Apr. 30. more
Rich Brown appointed to Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education

LANSING
-- State Representative Rich Brown (D- Bessemer) has received a temporary
appointment to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, which
oversees funding for Michigan's universities. The committee will hear
testimonies from Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan
University within the next month. more
Joe Kirkish to receive 2002 Donovan outstanding service award

HOUGHTON
-- Michigan Tech Professor Emeritus and Keweenaw Now columnist Joe Kirkish
has been selected to receive the 2002 Clair M. Donovan Award for
outstanding service. Kirkish was nominated by MTU Chemistry Professor Les Leifer,
who received the award in 2001. Leifer noted Kirkish's devotion to MTU
students and his service to the community have continued since his retirement a
decade ago. The MTU chapter of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity presents
this award. more
Annual Conservation District Tree Sale is underway

Conservation District's Annual Spring Tree Sale. All proceeds from the sale
benefit soil and water conservation programs in Houghton and Keweenaw counties. more
DEQ grants septic permit to Mt. Bohemia; Black Bear may add ski hill motel to system

LANSING
-- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) approved on March 29 a
permit allowing developer Black Bear, Inc. -- a subsidiary of Crosswinds
Communities, Inc. -- to discharge sewage from Mt. Bohemia with a maximum of 36
lb. of phosphorous to Lac La Belle, near Lake Superior. Recently published DEQ
memos reveal that Black Bear wishes to add a 22-unit motel to the system. more
