DEQ grants septic permit to Mt. Bohemia; Black Bear may add ski hill motel to system

LANSING
-- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) approved on March 29 a
permit allowing developer Black Bear, Inc. -- a subsidiary of Crosswinds
Communities, Inc. -- to discharge sewage from Mt. Bohemia with a maximum of 36
lb. of phosphorous to Lac La Belle, near Lake Superior. Recently published DEQ
memos reveal that Black Bear wishes to add a 22-unit motel to the system. more

Lode wins national award

HOUGHTON -- The MTU Lode, Michigan Tech's weekly student newspaper,
recently received the 2002 College Media Advisers' Apple Award for the Best
Four-Year, Non-Daily Broadsheet in the United States. In January the Lode
won 12 awards in the Michigan Press Association's 2001
College Newspaper Contest for Division II. In 2000 it was voted MTU's Most
Improved Student Organization and in 2001 the university's Student Organization
of the Year. more
MTU Lode reports indecent exposure during Mt. Bohemia's Mardi Gras Madness

HOUGHTON -- The Michigan Tech Lode's front-page story and photo on
Wednesday, March 20, reports that Mount Bohemia's Mardi Gras Madness party
on March 16 included a surprise for some. At least three women were seen
exposing themselves, two of them in front of school-aged children. The
article indicates no complaints were filed with either Mount Bohemia,
according to Black Bear President Lonie Glieberman, or with the Keweenaw
County Sheriff's Office. more

MARQUETTE
-- Two memos from Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) staff in
Marquette to Lonnie Lee, DEQ Waste Management Division chief in Lansing,
indicate that both the Waste Management and Surface Water Quality divisions in
the Marquette DEQ office are satisfied with Black Bear's anti-degradation
statement for Mt. Bohemia and plan to issue a permit soon for the ski hill's
septic system. more

Great Bear Chase ski race cancelled

-- High winds downed more than 22 trees on the Swedetown Trails Saturday night,
March 9, causing officials to cancel the Great Bear Chase cross-country ski race
scheduled for Sunday, March 10. The Junior Bear Chase was held as scheduled on

Michigan registers warmest winter on record

HOUGHTON
-- Guest writer Katie Alvord reports that preliminary numbers indicate this was
the warmest meteorological winter -- through February -- ever measured for the
state of Michigan. The National Weather Service says the last four months have
been the warmest November through February on record in Marquette, with the
average temperature hitting 27.2 degrees. more
House approves Brown anti-terrorism legislation on hazardous materials transport

LANSING -- The Michigan House of Representatives has approved legislation that
would require an applicant for a commercial driver's license with a hazardous
materials endorsement to undergo a criminal background check as part of the
licensing process. This legislation is part of a 40-bill package to address
terrorism concerns in Michigan, according to Rep. Rich Brown (D-Bessemer),
sponsor of the bill. more
Annual Conservation District Tree Sale is underway

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District is now taking orders for
spring delivery of young trees during their Annual Spring Tree Sale. All
proceeds from the sale benefit soil and water conservation programs in Houghton
and Keweenaw counties. more
Snowmobiler suffers serious injury in Keweenaw

EAGLE RIVER -- An Illinois man suffered serious injuries on Feb. 27 after losing
control of his 1998 Arctic Cat snowmobile while traveling north on Trail #3 near
Phoenix. Keweenaw County Sheriff Lahti said the recent increase in snowfall is a
concern because more snowmobiles, while good for the economy, increase the
potential for accidents. more
