Granholm calls for better zoning, Great Lakes water protection

GRAND RAPIDS -- Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm
said Michigan needs strengthened zoning to protect its world-class rivers and
wetlands from sprawling development, improved sewage management to keep beaches
free of fecal bacteria and laws that promote more efficient use of water. The
Michigan Land Use Institute reports on this speech and introduces on its Web

Peace Alliance invites dialogue during March 2 walk

HANCOCK -- "Inviting Dialogue" will be the theme for the Copper
Country Peace Alliance's Walk for Peace, to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday,
March 2, starting from the Hancock City Hall. The walk will then proceed to
Houghton and return to Hancock. The Alliance encourages members of the community
to dialogue with the walkers about current issues. more
Keweenaw County ZBA to hold public hearing Feb. 26 on commercial septic zoning

EAGLE RIVER -- The Keweenaw County Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) will hold a
public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 26 in the Courthouse in Eagle River.
The ZBA is expected to report on a response from the County Prosecuting Attorney
concerning whether septic systems utilized by a commercial enterprise cross over
into a residential zone. South Shore (Lac La Belle) residents raised the issue
because the Mt. Bohemia septic system extends into a Resort Residential zoning
district. more
Stupak: FEMA grants can aid Northern Michigan fire departments

WASHINGTON -- A federal program that brought more than $210,000 in grants to
northern Michigan fire departments in 2001 is being offered again in 2002, along
with area workshops on how to apply for the grants, according to Rep. Bart
Stupak, D-Menominee. more
Federal grant to support MTU study of greenhouse gas effects on forests

HOUGHTON -- A three-year federal grant of nearly $3 million will support
researchers at Michigan Technological University's School of Forestry and Wood
Products in their study of effects of elevated levels of ozone and carbon
dioxide on northern forests. The researchers hope to help scientists predict
what forests will look like 50 or 100 years from now. Read more on the MTU Web

Keweenaw Krayons of Mohawk wins Great Lakes Community Arts Award

MOHAWK -- The Keweenaw Krayons arts program in Mohawk is one of five
statewide recipients of the Great Lakes Community Arts Awards, granted by the
Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies for 2002. It is the only
community arts program so recognized in the Upper Peninsula this year. more
Senate Farm Bill protects family farmers and environment

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Sierra Club praised the Senate for approving, on Feb. 13,
the Senate Farm Bill -- championed by Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA), Paul Wellstone
(D-MN) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) -- as a major improvement over the House bill and
current law. The Senate Farm Bill would provide more money to help farmers
safeguard clean water, protect wetlands and prevent suburban sprawl as well as

Michigan acquires first half of Keweenaw Tip property

LANSING
-- More than 3,000 acres of pristine wild habitat now belongs to the people of
Michigan, with 3,275 more acres to come next year, thanks to one of the
largest property transactions in the 25-year history of the Michigan Natural
Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF). On Feb. 8, 2002, representatives of The Nature
Conservancy handed over "half a key to the Keweenaw" to DNR officials
in Marquette. The land will be open to the public for recreational activities,
including hunting, fishing and hiking. more
