Arts funding increased for Western

LANSING
-- The Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs announces increased
funding for regranting in region 13, the six counties of the Western Upper
Peninsula. Due to growth in applications requesting funding, allocations have
been raised to $58,200 for arts and culture projects in Houghton, Keweenaw,
Baraga, Ontonagon, Iron and Gogebic counties. Feb. 1 is the deadline for
applications for the third funding cycle. more
North Woods Conservancy obtains bridge loan from Mott Foundation

CALUMET
-- The North Woods Conservancy (NWC) has obtained a bridge loan from the Charles
Stewart Mott Foundation's new Great Lakes Revolving Loan Fund (GLRLF) to
complete the purchase of Seven Mile Point for $361,400. NWC is the first
organization to receive funds from the new GLRLF. The nearly $4 million grant,
administered by The Conservation Fund, is the largest environmental grant in the
Foundation’s history. more
Engler
may stop fighting drilling ban

LANSING -- According to the Detroit Free Press, Gov. John Engler hinted on
Monday, Jan. 28, that he may stop fighting a proposed ban on oil and gas
drilling under the Great Lakes. Since the Michigan House of Representatives
approved a ban last week on a vote of 98-7, Engler said he expects the Michigan
Legislature will pass into law a ban overwhelmingly supported by Engler's
lieutenant governor, Dick Posthumus; the other major-party gubernatorial
candidates; and most of Michigan's congressional delegation. more
Finnish snow builder wins Heikinpäivä Hiihto Ski Race

CALUMET
-- Seppo Makinen of Oulu, Finland, visiting snow house (lumitalo)
engineer, served as Grand Marshall of the Heikinpäivä parade on Saturday
morning, Jan. 19, and then went out and won the Heikinpäivä Hiihto
cross-country ski race that same afternoon at the Swedetown Trails in Calumet. The
Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club reports complete results of the race, as well as
winners of the Copper Island Classic race held on Jan. 20 in Chassell. more
Red Cross aids family made homeless by fire; injured mom moved to Duluth Burn Center

HANCOCK -- A Calumet Township mother and her two children -- who lost all their possessions when a fire swept through their side of a duplex home early Monday morning, Dec. 31, 2001 -- have received aid from the Western Upper Peninsula American Red Cross. The mother, Deborah Stiehl, who was originally taken to the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center on Monday, has been moved to the Burn Center in Duluth, Minn., where she is receiving treatment.

Peace Alliance to hold fifth Walking Vigil

HOUGHTON -- The Copper Country Peace Alliance will sponsor a fifth Walking Vigil for Peace and Nonviolence on Saturday, Jan. 5. Anyone wishing to join the walk is asked to meet at the Motherlode
café in Houghton at 11:30 a.m. Participants have walked from Houghton to Hancock and back every Saturday since Dec.
8, 2001. The Dec. 22 walk attracted 45 walkers. On a snowy Dec. 29, the
group watched a documentary video on the School of the Americas during their
stop in Hancock. more
IP/LSLC, TNC close on first stage of Keweenaw land sale

HOUGHTON -- On Jan. 3, 2002, International Paper/Lake Superior Land Co.
(IP/LSLC) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) closed on the first part of the Keweenaw Tip land sale totaling 4,069 acres for $5.72 million. TNC will purchase a total of 6,275 acres at the Tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and hold it until state funds become available for purchase by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources
(DNR). The project will conserve the forested character of the land and protect important recreational and ecological resources.

First closing on Keweenaw land sale expected Jan. 3

MARQUETTE -- The Nature Conservancy, as broker for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, expects to close Thursday, Jan. 3, on the first part of the Keweenaw land sale -- 4,069 acres at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula to be purchased from International Paper/Lake Superior Land Co. This portion of the total sale of 6,275.2 acres is to be transferred to state ownership in February.
