In Eagle River, the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club provides food for a herd of 150-200 deer. The Keweenaw County Sheriff's Department formerly fed the deer, but this year new rules did not allow them to have a permit because of their location too near a paved road.

Kevin Junttila of Tampa, Florida, visits the deer herd in Eagle River while on a recent Keweenaw tour with his Dad, Jim Junttila, Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club board member and publicist.

Keweenaw County Sheriff Ron Lahti said the rules do allow residents on Roads 2, 4 and 6 to feed the deer, with special food provided by the Sportsmen's Club.

Eagle River deer are not very camera-shy. Drivers need to exercise caution on roads near the deer-feeding station.

"There's a good, healthy herd here," Sheriff Lahti said.
