Obituary: Keweenaw's Town Crier John Kaleita
LAC LA BELLE -- John Kaleita, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, September 24,
2003, at the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

John was born in Stambaugh, Mich., and moved to Detroit as an infant. He was
a graduate of Cass Tech High School in Detroit and enlisted in the Army Air
Corps, serving in North Africa and Italy in World War II.
John was employed as a typesetter with the Detroit Free Press and later with
the T.P. Henry Company. He was a community advocate, serving as president of the
Highland Park, Mich., jaycees and the Ferndale, Mich., PTA. In retirement he
published the Keweenaw newsletters South Point Scene, North Shore
Scene, the South Point Points and the South Shore Town Crier. John was a member of V.F.W. Post
3900 of Calumet.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and four daughters: Carleen (Arthur)
Kapetansky of Henderson, Nev.; Lynne (Bill Tacker) Kaleita of Troy, Mich.; JoAnn
Kaleita of Dundee, Mich.; and Susan Kaleita of Ferndale, Mich. He is also
survived by his sister, Helen Wright of Oak Park, Mich., and a brother, Edward
Kaleita of Kingsley, Mich. He was preceded in death by a sister, Amy Zwirner,
and three brothers, Edwin, Emil and Arthur Kaleita. Also surviving are four
grandchildren, Andrew Kaleita and Mark, April and Michael Kapetansky.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 29, at 11 a.m. in the Ryan
Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Johnson to officiate.
