The Fourth Annual Western Upper Peninsula Science Fair will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2002, in the Michigan Tech University Memorial Union Ballroom. The public is invited to view projects of 400 area students from grades four through nine from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the ballroom.

Students from nine local elementary schools will participate: Houghton Elementary, Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) Elementary, Hancock Elementary, Dollar Bay Elementary, Lake Linden Hubbell Elementary, E.B. Holman, Ironwood Elementary, Arvon Elementary and Bessemer Elementary.

Students from six middle schools and one high school will also participate: Hancock Middle School, Houghton Middle School, Ewen Trout Creek Middle School, Dollar Bay Middle School, Lake Linden Hubbell Middle School, Washington Middle School and Hancock High School.

Participants in the fair submit projects on an experiments they have conducted on any topic of interest in science. The students follow the scientific method to design and conduct their experiment. Besides gaining valuable skills from participating in the science fair, the students develop skills of scientific inquiry and problem solving. Furthermore, by using different media -- such as written reports, graphs and models -- they learn to communicate their findings in a way that is meaningful to an audience.

The Western UP Science Fair is open to the public from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2002. The student projects will be on display in the Memorial Union Ballroom on Michigan Tech's campus. The awards ceremony will take place from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Fisher Hall, Room 135 on Michigan Tech's Campus. The Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education and the MTU Omega Chi Epsilon Chemical Engineering Honor Society sponsor the fair.
