Schumann Festival to benefit hurricane victims Oct. 8-9

HANCOCK -- The Copper Country's First Schumann Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Portage Lake United Church, Houghton. The two-concert series will be a benefit for the recent Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

The Saturday concert will feature several area musicians: pianists Susan Byykkonen and Neil Paynter, violinist Andrew McInnes and mezzo-soprano Mary Richards-Kallman. Various works of Robert Schumann will be performed, including his song-cycle Frauenliebe und Leben (A Woman's Love and Life), Op. 42; a work for piano duet, Kinderball, Op. 130; and Schumann's First Violin and Piano Sonata in A minor, Op.105. Additionally, concert-goers will hear a selection of Robert Schumann's little-known prose, read by Barry Pegg.

The Sunday concert will feature Robert Schumann's Second Violin and Piano Sonata in D minor, Op. 121, and a song-cycle by Clara Schumann, Jucunda, Op. 23, sung by Ann Campbell. Mary Richards-Kallman will read brief portions of Robert and Clara Schumann's marriage diary.

There is no admission charge for the concerts. Free-will monetary donations to benefit the recent Gulf Coast Hurricane victims will be collected during the performances and channeled through the auspices of Church World Service. Portage Lake United Church is located at 1400 E. Houghton Avenue, Houghton. For more information, call Mary Richards-Kallman at 906-482-5202.
