Local peace groups to march against U.S. occupation of Iraq Sat., Oct. 25
HOUGHTON, MARQUETTE -- A group of concerned Copper Country citizens who strongly oppose the United States occupation of Iraq will march
THIS Saturday, Oct. 25, in solidarity with people of peace all over the world. The Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice will also march on Oct. 25.
Both local marches are in solidarity with national marches planned for Washington, D.C., and San Francisco this Saturday.*
The Copper Country march will begin at noon from the Motherlode Coffee House
in Houghton. It will proceed across the Portage Lift Bridge to the Hancock City Hall and return to the Motherlode. The Marquette group will hold their regular Saturday vigil in front of the Marquette Post Office from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then march to the Harlow Park peace pole. The Marquette group also invites musicians to bring their instruments.**
These peace marches are intended to send a message to President Bush and Congress, letting them know how concerned citizens feel about the illegal, immoral and unjustified occupation of Iraq.
In addition to their march, the Copper Country group will send a signed petition to President Bush and the Michigan Congressional delegation, telling them that the occupation must end because of the terrible toll it is taking on Iraqi and American lives and because of the damage it is doing to the American economy. To add to that tragedy, a billion dollars a day is being paid out to big corporations while pressing human needs go unmet here at home.
Concerned citizens are invited to join either of these marches.
