Lake Superior Alliance to hold local meetings Nov. 9, Nov. 11

SPOONER, WIS. -- The Lake Superior Alliance will hold two information and strategy sessions on "Lake Superior at the Crossroads" on Saturday, Nov. 9, in Marquette, and on Monday, Nov. 11, in Houghton. The Saturday meeting will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Northern Michigan University Center in Marquette. Monday's meeting, to be held in conjunction with the Friends of the Land of Keweenaw (FOLK) Annual Business Meeting, is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel in Houghton.

These special meetings invite local citizens, activists, Tribal and First Nation members, government officials and agency representatives to focus attention on current issues affecting Lake Superior.

Lake Superior at Bete Grise South, a stretch of Keweenaw shoreline that has been a subject of controversy for several years. Because of wetland issues, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality twice denied a permit for an access road that would allow residential development along the shore. The permit denial is still being contested. The Lake Superior Alliance is one of many environmental groups that have opposed the potential development at Bete Grise South. The meetings will feature presentations on water exports and diversions, proposed power plants and other toxic impacts and shoreland development. The meetings are two of a series 10 Lake Superior Alliance meetings to be held throughout the watershed to involve more of Lake Superior's residents in the work of the Alliance to ensure a healthier future for the Lake. The meetings are free and open to the public.

At each of the meetings Alliance members will present information about pressing and upcoming threats to the watershed, ask community members to share concerns about local impacts and continue a lake-wide dialogue about more effective work to protect Lake Superior.

Additional meetings will be held at the following locations:

  • Ashland, Wis. -- 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center.
  • Duluth, Minn. --  7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace 319.
  • Grand Marais, Minn. -- 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Grand Marais Senior Center.

The Lake Superior Alliance is an international organization of environmental groups and individuals working to protect and restore of the water, air and landscape of the Lake Superior region.
