Blacksmith to demonstrate craft at Hancock Labyrinth Oct. 18

HANCOCK -- Marquette area blacksmith Gordon Gearhart will be at the Hancock Labyrinth site from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, to demonstrate his craft. Gearhart will make hand-forged steel sign posts, which will complete the Labyrinth, a project funded by a Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies Community PARTners Artists in Residence grant.

The Community Arts Center facilitated the project, which brought artists and community members together to build stone sculptures, a cob construction bench, gardens and walking paths at the Labyrinth.

Seven different youth groups led by Hancock artist Bethany Stevens painted vibrant weatherproof banners, which will be mounted at the site to provide year round color. The gardens were created by community gardener Nancy Carr with the help of numerous enthusiastic volunteers.

The Labyrinth is located at the base of the Portage Lift Bridge next to the Ramada Inn. The blacksmith demonstration is free and open to the public. For more information about the Labyrinth call the Community Arts Center at 482-2333.
