Susan Kaufmann to speak on Michigan Civil Rights Initiative Sept. 25

HOUGHTON --Susan Kaufmann, associate director of the Center for the Education of Women at
the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, will give a talk, “The Potential Impact of the
Michigan Civil Rights Initiative,” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 25, in
Fisher 135 on the Michigan Tech campus. She will also be the guest of Women in Science and
Engineering (WISE) at a brown-bag lunch and informal discussion from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
on Monday in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge. Both events are free and open to the public.
Kaufmann will discuss the implications of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, should it be

Olympic swimmer to visit Houghton Sept.

HOUGHTON -- Two-time Olympian Neil Walker will be coming to Houghton, Sunday,
Sept. 24, to conduct a swim clinic sponsored by the Killer Whales Swim Team with funding from the Keweenaw Community Foundation.
Walker was recently part of a new World Record in the 400 meter Freestyle Relay
at the 2006 Pan-Pacific Championships. He has
two Olympic Gold medals, in addition to a silver and a bronze, and holds
five American records in Freestyle, Backstroke and the Individual Medley. The swim clinic will be from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
at the Houghton High School Pool. The cost is $30 per swimmer registered before
Sept. 20, $40 after that date and at the event. The clinic will include in-water demonstrations of all the strokes, a motivational speech, autograph signing and in-water instruction.

MTU Sustainable Futures Institute to
host poster exhibit, banquet Sept. 20

HOUGHTON --
Campus Sustainability Week at Michigan Tech University gets underway on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 20 and
21, as the Sustainable Futures Institute (SFI) hosts the annual meeting of its advisory
board. The Annual Sustainability Poster Session will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30
p.m on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Rozsa Lobby. This will be followed by the annual SFI reception and banquet.
The Campus Sustainability Week continues on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25 and 26,
with talks by David Gallo, Director of Special Projects at Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution, located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. more

Parade of Nations to feature Cass Tech Marching Band, international entertainment Sept.

HOUGHTON --
Michigan Tech will feature several events in conjunction with the annual Parade of Nations,
to be held Saturday, Sept. 16. Detroit's Cass Tech Marching Band, ranked third in the
nation, will return to Houghton Friday, Sept. 15. In addition to marching in Saturday's
parade, they will hold a workshop for local high school bands from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
on Friday, Sept. 15, at Sherman Field. All are welcome to watch. On Saturday, participants representing
as many as 90 countries will line up at 10:30 a.m. in front of Hancock Middle School for the
parade, which features floats, bands and local 4-H groups helping to carry countries’ signs
and flags. From 11 a.m. to noon, the parade will proceed from Hancock across the bridge to
the Dee Stadium, where the public is invited to browse foods and crafts from China, Iran, India, Malaysia, Guatemala, Finland, Pakistan, the United States and more.
Festivities also
include international bands, songs, dances, and a fashion show. On Sunday, Sept.
17, at 7 p.m., visiting musical group Los Inkas will present "The Power of the Andes," indigenous music
from southern Ecuador, in MTU's McArdle Theater. Tickets, $5 per person, will
be available at the door or during the Parade of Nations.

Cohousing group to meet Sept. 13 in Hancock

HANCOCK -- As temperatures drop, thoughts are turning to shelter and rising energy costs.
The discussion on creating energy-efficient, community-focused homes for sustainable living
will continue at the next cohousing meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday,
Sept. 13, at the corner of Reservation and White in Hancock (the old Glad Tidings Church).
For those who want background information on the topic, primary books include Scotthanson’s
The Cohousing Handbook, McCamant and Durrett’s Cohousing and Christian’s

Conservancy to celebrate grant awards Sept. 9

AHMEEK -- North Woods Conservancy (NWC) members and the general public are invited to help celebrate the award of a $928,000 National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant and a $1.97 million Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant, which will be used to acquire 532 acres and more than a mile of Lake Superior shoreline in Keweenaw County for natural resource protection and public enjoyment. Beginning at Noon on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Ahmeek Streetcar Station,
four miles north of Calumet on US 41, the event will feature live music with Gail English and Rob
Fritz; free pizza from Calumet Pizza Works and other refreshments (bring your own
beverage); the formal unveiling of the 4-foot by 8-foot original oil painting “Gratiot River North” by artist Robert Leland
Pence; and a Silent Auction with items such as a Sunset Cruise on the Isle Royale Queen, dinner at the Harbor Haus, bike and ski tune-ups and a private tour of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. For more information call the NWC at 337-0782.

HANCOCK -- Finlandia University's Finnish American Heritage Center
(FAHC) Gallery
is hosting "Matti Koskela: Tiima," an exhibition of art by Finnish artist Matti Koskela, one of Finland's most
prominent contemporary artists, through September 28,
2006. An opening reception for the artist will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday,
Sept. 7, at the FAHC. At the reception, Koskela will discuss his work and public sculpture
commissions. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

his work throughout Finland and in Europe, Russia, Egypt and the United States. more
Keweenaw County Zoning/Planning Commission to hold public meeting on new
Zoning Ordinance Sept. 7

EAGLE RIVER -- The Keweenaw County Zoning/Planning Commission will hold a public hearing
at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Mohawk School to present an overview of the updated zoning ordinance and receive questions.
This will be an opportunity for all citizens to voice their concerns and questions on the zoning ordinance.
The Commission has been working with Mark Wyckoff of Planning and Zoning Center, Inc., Lansing, to update the County's 1975 Zoning Ordinance.
Wyckoff, who will attend the meeting, is Michigan's foremost expert on zoning
issues and has had several work sessions with the Commission thanks to a grant from the Coastal Zone Management Program of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).
MTU students seek
communication projects

HOUGHTON -- Does your organization need help with a Web site? publicity and
fundraising materials? documentation manuals? This fall Michael Moore, instructor in the Department of
Humanities and the Enterprise Program at Michigan Tech University, is teaching an Advanced Practicum in Scientific and
Technical Communication (STC), a course that supports students in developing and
delivering a complex, client-based communication project. Local groups and
organizations, both on and off campus, are invited to submit projects for this
class. These upper-division STC majors can work with you on projects ranging
from Web sites to usability and human-computer interaction (HCI) studies to content-management
systems. The deadline for submitting a brief description of your project
has been extended to Friday, Sept. 8. more
