Keweenaw Krayons to hold free winter art classes in Mohawk

MOHAWK -- Keweenaw Krayons Art to Go winter workshops -- free and open to all ages -- offer an opportunity to create gifts or special art pieces for your home. They will be held in the
Renée Stemler Memorial Art Room, located in the Mohawk School. Workshops include Original Ornaments, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, with Adria Simpson; Batik Techniques, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, with Bailey Eckland; Dayna Carlson's Beginner Embroidery, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17; and "Fabric Burnout," 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, with Adria Simpson. Funds are available to provide taxi rides to those wanting to attend the workshops but lacking transportation. For more information or registration call 337-4706 or email

Town Hall Meeting to discuss home heating concerns Nov. 29

HANCOCK -- Copper Country Citizens for Progressive Change will hold a Town Hall
Meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Lakeview Manor Community Room,
1401 W. Quincy, Hancock. The topic will be "Is Our Community Secure for the Winter," relative to the cost and availability of heating fuels and other energy.
The various issues embedded in this question include the affordability of home heating,
transportation, health care and perhaps other implications which participants may
propose, such as long-term implications of changing global energy conditions. For more information, call 288-3181.

meetings, public hearings to discuss sulfide mining rules

MARQUETTE -- Rules workshops are being sponsored by National Wildlife Federation,
Sierra Club and the Michigan Environmental Council in preparation for public hearings being held across Michigan on non-ferrous
metallic mineral mining. The public is invited to these workshops to learn more about the rules, how they need
to be improved and what is good about them. In MARQUETTE, a Rules Workshop
will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, in the Michigan
Room of the University Center at Northern Michigan University (NMU). On
Wednesday, Nov. 30, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will
sponsor an informal public information meeting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and a
formal public hearing on the mining rules from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Huron and Erie
Rooms of the NMU University Center. more

Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, in the Rozsa Performing Arts Center Lobby
on the Michigan Tech campus. Regional artists, merchants and nonprofit organizations
will offer the public unique holiday gift shopping -- including Christmas
wreaths and holiday floral arrangements, birch bark items, jewelry, handmade
soaps, books, journals, felted wool hats, weaving, homemade jams, jelly and
maple syrup, photography, woodenware, pottery, painted folk art and country
paintings and many more unusual items.

Guatemala to speak Nov. 14

HANCOCK -- Vernon Chow spent the year of 2004 serving as an accompanier to witnesses in a landmark trial bringing charges of genocide against former Guatemalan presidents Rios Montt and Lucas Garcia.
Chow will speak of his experiences as a human rights observer at 7 p.m. Monday,

Turquoise Art Gallery to hold Christmas sale Nov. 10-12

HANCOCK -- The Turquoise Art Gallery will hold a Christmas Sale of art works and
gifts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10, 11 and 12.
The Gallery is located in the E. L. Wright Building, the former school building
on U.S. 41 near Pat's Foods in Hancock. The sale is open to the public.
Near-eastern Dance Workshop to be held Nov. 5

HOUGHTON -- Ahlam will offer instruction in Danse Orientale, the Art of Near-eastern Dance, at a "Belly Dance" workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 205 E. Montezuma, Houghton. Cost is $20. Increase your flexibility, strength and grace. No prior dance experience is required and everyone is welcome. Participants should wear comfortable clothing. Ahlam has more than 30 years of dance studies, including oriental dance and folkloric dance with the leading dance teachers from the United States, Egypt, Turkey and Spain. University Theatre presents Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses

HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech's Department of Fine Arts will stage Metamorphoses,
a play by MacArthur Award winning author and director Many Zimmerman, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 3, 4 and 5, in McArdle Theatre (Walker Arts and Humanities Center). Sue Stephens, associate professor of theatre, directs the play -- eight scenes based on Ovid's timeless tales of change and the transforming power of love. The challenge of designing and building the set, which includes a large pool in McArdle Theatre, has occupied Dennis Kerwin, theatre shop supervisor, and his student crew for the past two months. Meeting to discuss local cohousing project Nov. 5

HANCOCK -- All interested persons are invited to attend a meeting at 2 p.m. on Saturday,
Nov. 5, at the Motherlode in Houghton to discuss cohousing and a proposed local project.
Cohousing is a way for families and individuals to share some of the tasks,
expenses and enjoyment of living cooperatively while still maintaining separate residences. The proposed project is intended to demonstrate how this innovative
housing model can lead to a better quality of life through energy efficiency, increased
