Peace on Earth Walk to be held on Christmas Day

(Photo © 2003 and courtesy Eric Munch)HANCOCK -- A Peace on Earth walk will be held from Noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Christmas Day, starting in front of the Motherlode in Houghton and going to Hancock City Hall and back. If people would like to carry signs, they are welcome to attend a sign-making gathering from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24, at 1016 Crestwood Dr. (1/2 mile north of the Keweenaw Co-op) in Hancock. "Walking and talking with others willing to put in motion a physical reminder about Peace on Earth might be the best Christmas present we can give ourselves this year," said Merle Kindred, organizer of the walk. Participants of all ages are welcome to join the walk. Call Merle at 482-7803 with questions.

MTU's Lutheran Campus Ministry to receive grant for leadership program

Colorful Lakota Star Quilt to be raffled on Dec. 12 to help fund a student trip to Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. HOUGHTON -- Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has announced a $50,000 grant to Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton under the Youth Leadership Initiative. The funds will allow a student project team, supervised by Michigan Tech University engineering and design faculty and the LCM project manager, to design ecologically low-impact dwellings to be built on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. LCM has committed to raise an additional $12,500 over the two-year period of this pilot program for training student leaders to find appropriate solutions to basic human needs in diverse cultural settings. A beautiful Star Quilt, made by a member of the Lakota Nation as a gift to students for work done for the reservation community, is being raffled to help cover expenses for a 2005 Spring Break trip to Pine Ridge. more

Trees deck Rozsa lobby for silent auction Dec. 1-8

HOUGHTON -- From Dec. 1 to Dec. 8 the Rozsa Center will sparkle with 18 beautifully lit and decorated holiday trees created by gifted area artists and businesses. Ranging from tabletop to full size, the unique trees (many with handmade ornaments) will be sold to the highest bidders in a silent auction to benefit the Class Acts outreach program for area schools and programming at the Rozsa. From Frosty Keweenaw by Nancy Leonard of the Einerlei to Deck the Waves by Skipper Deb Kinzi and First Mate Mike Irish, the trees range from elegant to fun and funky. The lobby will be open for public viewing during the following hours: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 1-3, and Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 6-7; 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4; 8 a.m.- approx. 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, when the auction will close after the intermission of A Christmas Carol. Results will be posted by the end of the show that evening, and the highest bidders will be notified by the Rozsa Center Box Office. For more information, please call 487-2844.

Houghton County Democratic Committee to hold dinner meeting, elections Dec. 1

HANCOCK --The Houghton County Democratic Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Gino's Restaurant, 800 Quincy St., Hancock, for a Dutch Treat Holiday Dinner. The Houghton County Convention to elect the new executive committee of the Houghton County Democratic Committee will be held immediately following the dinner. The newly elected executive committee will then elect officers. A brief regular monthly meeting will follow.
