Walkin' Jim Stoltz returns to
perform at Calumet Theatre Oct. 1, Ishpeming Oct. 2

CALUMET -- One of America's most unique folksingers and backcountry travelers, Walkin' Jim Stoltz, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Calumet Theatre.
In his his multimedia show, "Forever Wild," Jim projects fantastic photos, taken while hiking
through miles of North American wildlands -- a backdrop for his songs and stories about
wild places.
This show is a fundraiser for the Keweenaw Land Trust's newest preserve -- the Manitou Island Light Station -- 93 acres of unique island habitat and a mile of Lake Superior shoreline.
Every dollar Walkin’ Jim helps raise for this concert will allow KLT to
request $2 from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program. Walkin' Jim will also present his "Forever Wild" show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, in the Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming, to benefit Northwoods Wilderness Recovery, Eagle Alliance and
Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve projects. more
"Imagine Community" to offer potluck, music, discussion Sept. 29

HOUGHTON -- "Imagine Community" -- a gathering intended to bring different communities in the area together to talk about what community means to us, what it can mean to the broader community and how we might sustain community -- will consist of a potluck at 6 p.m. and a discussion at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church / Lutheran Campus Ministry, 1100 College Avenue, Houghton. Keweenaw volunteers needed for Michigan Coastal Cleanup Sunday, Sept. 19

CALUMET -- The North Woods Conservancy (NWC) invites volunteers to participate in the Michigan Coastal Cleanup from 9 a.m. to Noon, Sunday, Sept. 19. Cleanups are scheduled for the Gratiot River County Park, Seven Mile Point or Gratiot River North. The Michigan Coastal Cleanup is part of an international beach cleanup effort which removes trash from the world’s beaches and waterways, identifies sources of debris and attempts to change behaviors that cause pollution. NWC has coordinated the Keweenaw Peninsula beach cleanup since 2001. Volunteers wishing to become a beach captain or volunteer this Sunday or those wishing to adopt a beach of their own to clean up should call NWC at 337-0782 or email
info@northwoodsconservancy.org
for information. Please note that the beach cleanup has been changed to Sunday so as not to conflict with Houghton’s Parade of Nations on Saturday.

Turquoise Gallery begins fall season Sept. 17 with abstract art exhibit

HANCOCK -- "Marks of Esteem" by local artist Constance Johnson will open with a reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at Hancock's Turquoise Art Gallery. Originally from Minneapolis, Johnson graduated from the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and moved to the Copper Country in 1996. Winner of many awards, Johnson has had
solo and group exhibitions in this area and in Minnesota, Utah and Wisconsin. This collection of her latest and newest abstract art works will be exhibited from September 17 to October 30 in the Gallery, which is located in the E.L. Wright
Building, just south of Pat's Foods, on US 41 in Hancock. Gallery hours are Noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
Parade of Nations to follow new Houghton route Sept. 18

HOUGHTON -- The 15th Annual Parade of Nations will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, with a new route announced recently because of MDOT's road construction. Participants will meet at the Rozsa Center parking lot by 10:30 a.m. for
lineup. With the theme of Myths and Legends, the parade of floats, music and flags from nearly 80 countries will
leave the Rozsa about 11 a.m., travel through downtown Houghton, around to the lakeshore and back to Dee Stadium for the Multicultural Festival of ethnic foods, music and entertainment. Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to choose a country and walk with students from that country. Everyone is welcome! For more information call 487-2920.
Keweenaw Krayons to celebrate changes Sept. 10 in Mohawk

MOHAWK --
Keweenaw Krayons, Mohawk's non-profit arts organization, will host a celebration party beginning at noon
and extending into the evening on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Ramblin' Rose Arts Center in Mohawk. The event will celebrate birthdays, retirement, new positions and a move to the organization's new location, the Mohawk School.
Everyone who has been touched by Keweenaw Krayons in any way since its unofficial beginnings six years ago is invited to attend.
Visitors may bring a dish to pass and a non-alcoholic beverage of their choice. Coffee and tea will be furnished.
An Art Sale, Silent Auction, Membership Drive and Sweepstakes will be included
in the festivities. more
Farewell Party for Bernie Larsen Wednesday, Sept. 8

HOUGHTON -- The Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton will be the scene of a
farewell party for Bernie Larsen, founder of the exurban music venue, from 7
p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Larsen will be relocating to Los Angeles,
but plans a return visit to the Copper Country in March 2005. Musicians are
invited to join in an acoustic jam. The event is open to the public. Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee to meet
Sept. 7 in Allouez

MARQUETTE -- The Keweenaw Point Citizen Advisory Committee (KPAC) will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
Sept. 7, at the Allouez Township Community Center in Allouez. KPAC was assembled to provide recreation and resource management suggestions to the DNR regarding more than 8,000 acres of land recently acquired by the State of Michigan for public recreation and conservation.
KPAC meeting minutes are posted on Keweenaw Now as soon as they are
