Keweenaw Point Advisory Committee to meet Aug. 17 in Allouez

KPAC non-motorized trail committee members indicate trail recommendations on DNR map at Aug. 3 KPAC meeting at Mohawk School. MARQUETTE -- The Keweenaw Point Citizen Advisory Committee (KPAC) will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Allouez Township Community Center in Allouez. KPAC scheduled this second August meeting because of the approaching September deadline for submitting its recommendations to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). KPAC was assembled to provide recreation and resource management suggestions to the DNR regarding more than 8,000 acres of land recently acquired by the State of Michigan for public recreation and conservation. Watch for the Aug. 3 meeting minutes to be posted here soon. Minutes can also be mailed or e-mailed to individuals upon request. March to oppose sulfide mining on Yellow Dog Plains Aug. 14

(Photo courtesy Eagle Alliance.)BIG BAY -- A March for the Yellow Dog Plains will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug.14, on the Plains. Sponsored by concerned citizens in Big Bay and Baraga, this walk is a peaceful demonstration of citizen solidarity in opposition to a potential sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains. Citizens will gather on each side of the plains on the Triple A road and walk together towards the intended Kennecott Minerals mine site on the AAA. more

Conservation District, KLT to celebrate Dan's Point preservation Aug. 7

 Lake Superior shoreline at Dan's Point (Photo  © 2003 Gina Nicholas)HOUGHTON -- The public is invited to the Joseph and Mary Lizzadro Lakeshore Preserve Dedication Ceremony at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Dan's Point on Hwy M-26 between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District (HKCD) has recently acquired 24 acres and 643 feet of rugged Lake Superior shoreline known as Dan's Point. The Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT) holds a conservation easement on this property to ensure its protection for nature for future generations. more

Omphale Gallery to exhibit "Italian Hall: Beyond the Bricks," photos by Eric Munch

Reprinted with permission.)CALUMET -- The Omphale Gallery in Calumet will showcase "Italian Hall: Beyond The Bricks," a photographic exhibit by Eric Munch of Calumet, Aug. 4 through Sept. 4, 2004. The Opening Reception will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. The exhibit includes never-before-seen photos of the site where 74 people lost their lives on Christmas Eve, 1913. Woody Guthrie wrote his song "1913 Massacre" about that tragedy.

Democrats to hold meeting, discussion

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton County Democratic Party will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, in the conference room of the Super 8 Motel in Houghton. Items to be discussed include the August county convention, the opening of the party headquarters and the fall event schedule. Kerry for President campaign signs and buttons will be available at the meeting. Anyone interested in becoming involved in the Democratic Party is encouraged to attend. The Democrats will also meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton for discussion. (Image © 2004 Rebecca Koivu and courtesy Turquoise Gallery)HANCOCK -- Whether it is a beach scene in watercolor pencil or a sculpture made with Lake Superior sand, the work of Calumet artist Rebecca Koivu is representative of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Hancock's Turquoise Gallery is hosting a selection of Koivu's work in the exhibit, "A Story of Keweenaw." Sevil Soyer, Gallery co-owner and artist, said she discovered these works during a visit to Koivu's home and was impressed by the quality of the art: "everything in the correct balance -- light and dark, perspective and color -- really, really correct." The Gallery has re-opened and is hosting this exhibit until September. Summer hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The Turquoise Gallery is located in the E. L. Wright Building, just south of Pat's IGA on U.S. 41.more

Fort Wilkins offers summer evening programs, special events for whole family

Wilkins Historic State Park) FORT WILKINS -- Sea stories, lighthouses, nature trails, mountain biking and kayaking are just a few of the wide variety of subjects being offered in this summer's visitors' programs at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, near Copper Harbor. In addition to evening programs, special events and costumed interpreters make history come alive at the fort, offering something for everyone in the family. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Quartermaster Exhibit will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, in conjunction with the "Fort Wilkins by Candlelight" program. Read the schedule of events through Aug. 27.

New Finlandia exhibit chronicles Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy

David Feinberg (Photo courtesy Finlandia University) HANCOCK -- For artist David Feinberg historical events provide a starting point for creating artwork that examines human tragedy. The tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald is chronicled in "None to Tell the Tale: The Edmund Fitzgerald," a five-panel work now on exhibit through Sept. 3 at the Finnish-American Heritage Center Gallery in Hancock. Feinberg, a professor of art at the University of Minnesota, conducted research for the artwork in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and at the Whitefish Point Lighthouse near Paradise, Michigan. A closing reception for the artist and a screening of Feinberg’s Voice to Vision, a DVD documentary of Holocaust survivors sharing their experiences through art, will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, in the Gallery. more
