CLK to hold community meeting on uses for Mohawk School July 26

Mural promoting peace in family and community displayed at July 24 Thimbleberry Festival in Allouez Township Park, Mohawk.MOHAWK -- The Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw School District (CLK) will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 26, at the Mohawk School to discuss possible uses for the school when the kindergarten is moved to Calumet this fall. "We are very interested in moving Keweenaw Krayons to this building," says Carol Rose, director of Keweenaw Krayons, a non-profit organization in Mohawk that aims to provide children, adults and seniors with the opportunity to explore their creative and artistic talents in a safe, mentoring and intergenerational environment and to introduce them to the business world of marketing their talents. (Image © 2004 Rebecca Koivu and courtesy Turquoise Gallery)HANCOCK -- Whether it is a beach scene in watercolor pencil or a sculpture made with Lake Superior sand, the work of Calumet artist Rebecca Koivu is representative of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Hancock's Turquoise Gallery is hosting a selection of Koivu's work in the exhibit, "A Story of Keweenaw." Sevil Soyer, Gallery co-owner and artist, said she discovered these works during a visit to Koivu's home and was impressed by the quality of the art: "everything in the correct balance -- light and dark, perspective and color -- really, really correct." The Gallery has re-opened and is hosting this exhibit until September. Summer hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The Turquoise Gallery is located in the E. L. Wright Building, just south of Pat's IGA on U.S. 41.more

Sibelius Academy concerts to feature young musicians July 28, 29, 30 at Calumet Theatre

The Sixth Annual Sibelius Academy Music Festival will feature three different concerts at the Calumet Theatre, Wednesday through Friday, July 28, 29 and 30. more

Fort Wilkins offers summer evening programs, special events for whole family

Wilkins Historic State Park) FORT WILKINS -- Sea stories, lighthouses, nature trails, mountain biking and kayaking are just a few of the wide variety of subjects being offered in this summer's visitors' programs at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, near Copper Harbor. In addition to evening programs, special events and costumed interpreters make history come alive at the fort, offering something for everyone in the family. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Quartermaster Exhibit will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, in conjunction with the "Fort Wilkins by Candlelight" program. New Finlandia exhibit chronicles Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy

David Feinberg (Photo courtesy Finlandia University) HANCOCK -- For artist David Feinberg historical events provide a starting point for creating artwork that examines human tragedy. The tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald is chronicled in "None to Tell the Tale: The Edmund Fitzgerald," a five-panel work now on exhibit through Sept. 3 at the Finnish-American Heritage Center Gallery in Hancock. Feinberg, a professor of art at the University of Minnesota, conducted research for the artwork in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and at the Whitefish Point Lighthouse near Paradise, Michigan. A closing reception for the artist and a screening of Feinberg’s Voice to Vision, a DVD documentary of Holocaust survivors sharing their experiences through art, will take place from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, in the Gallery. more

Democrats to hold meeting, discussion

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton County Democratic Party will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the conference room of the Super 8 Motel in Houghton. Items to be discussed include the August county convention, donations for the Rusty Hellman scholarship fund and plans for additional summer events. Kerry for President campaign signs and buttons will be available at the meeting. The Democrats will also meet this month at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, at the Motherlode Coffeehouse in Houghton for discussion. Calumet Theatre to screen preview of 1913 Massacre documentary July 7

CALUMET -- The Calumet Theatre will present a Special Preview Screening of 1913 Massacre, The Italian Hall Tragedy and the Woody Guthrie song it inspired, a documentary work-in-progress by filmmakers Ken Ross and Louis Galdieri. The screening will be held at 7 p.m on Wednesday, July 7, at the Theatre at 340 Sixth Street in Calumet. It is free and open to the public. The viewing is 13 minutes with a discussion to follow. Benefit concert for White House Inn July 6

(File photo  © 2004 and courtesy Organized Chaos) CALUMET -- The classic rock group "Organized Chaos" will host a concert from 6 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, July 6, at the National Guard Armory in Calumet to benefit the White House Inn, the band's birthplace. Tragically destroyed by fire recently, Mohawk's White House Inn held a lifetime of memories for locals and visitors alike. For a suggested donation of $3 at the door, attendees will enjoy an entire evening of fine entertainment by a variety of local performers. Sloppy Joes, hotdogs, munchies, soft drinks and baked goods will be available for a small donation. Drawings for prizes will also be held. All proceeds will go toward reopening the White House Inn (rebuilding or opening in another location). Volunteers are needed for food preparation, serving, set-up, cleaning, etc. Donation of food items, particularly baked goods, will be greatly appreciated.
