Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival welcomes mountain bikers June 19-20

(Keweenaw Now file photo by Michele Anderson)HOUGHTON -- The Portage Health System Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival of mountain biking for the whole family will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20, at the Maasto Hiihto Trails in Hancock and the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton. Events include cross-country distance races, a technical time trial, the Junior Chain Drive youth races and cross-country tours. Participants can register up to 30 minutes before the race, but registration is also available from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 18, and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19,  at the Best Western-Franklin Square Inn in Houghton. Junior Chain Drive T-shirts can be picked up at the Youngs' house, 1102 Ethel in Hancock, from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. Friday, June 18, so the kids can wear their T-shirts in the Bridgefest parade. Junior Chain Drive entry fee is $5. The Chain Drive supports trail preservation efforts throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. Visit the Keweenaw Trails Web site for details. Link to another Web site.

(Keweenaw Now file photo by Michele Anderson)HOUGHTON -- The Portage Health System Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival of mountain biking for the whole family will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20, at the Maasto Hiihto Trails in Hancock and the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton. Events include cross-country distance races, a technical time trial, the Junior Chain Drive youth races and cross-country tours. Participants can register up to 30 minutes before the race. An early bib and jersey pickup (with registration packets) for local racers and volunteers is being held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at 1102 Ethel in Hancock. Volunteers can stop by immediately after Thursday's volunteer meeting. "We also have limited quantities of jerseys still available with registration for Saturday's events," said Lori Hauswirth. Arts Council to dedicate Hancock Labyrinth Park June 17

Labyrinth poster (courtesy Copper Country Community Arts Council).HANCOCK -- The Copper Country Community Arts Council will host a Dedication of the Hancock Labyrinth Park and a Community Potluck from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, at the Hancock Labyrinth, next to the Ramada Inn, at the foot of the Portage Lift Bridge. The event will recognize partners, funders, community volunteers and the artists-in-residence that led the project. Bring a dish to pass, a blanket or lawn chair and your own place settings. Please RSVP by noon on Thursday, June 17, by calling the Community Arts Center at 482-2333.

In Good Company Theatre Troupe to present Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale June 18, 19, 20.

HOUGHTON -- The "In Good Company" Theatre Troupe will again present Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 18, 19 and 20, in McArdle Theatre, Walker Arts and Humanities Building, on the Michigan Technological University campus. Tickets are $5 at the door. The show includes live, original music composed for this production, dancers from the Mad World Dance Company and a host of local talent.
Editor's note: We regret our error in not posting the correct dates last week. This is the second weekend of the performance.

Moving sale June 12 to benefit Robert T. Brown Environmental Education Center

(July 2000 file photo by Michele Anderson)HANCOCK -- The Michigan Nature Association will hold a Benefit Moving Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at the home of Merle Kindred, 1016 Crestwood Drive in Hancock. All proceeds will go to the Robert T. Brown Environmental Education Center at Perrault Lake Bog, south of Painesdale. Viola Brown will be moving from her Houghton home to Duluth, Minn., and is sponsoring this fund-raising sale of furniture, tools, household items and more to benefit the Center, dedicated to her late husband, Robert T. Brown. Visitors are asked not to arrive before 9 a.m.

Turquoise Gallery exhibits work by Calumet artist

(Photo courtesy Turquoise Gallery)HANCOCK -- The Turquoise Art Gallery in Hancock is hosting, through the month of June, an exhibit of black and white drawings and pastel color paintings by Rebecca Koivu of Calumet. The public is invited to a reception for Ms. Koivu at 6 p.m. Friday, June 11, at the Gallery, located in the E.L. Wright Building, just south of Pat's IGA on U.S. 41. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
