Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District to hold 2004 Tree Sale

 Tree sale collage courtesy Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District.HOUGHTON -- This Thursday, April 1, is the deadline for ordering plants through the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District's (HKCD) annual Tree Sale scheduled for May 7 and 8 at the Houghton County Arena, 1500 Birch Street, Hancock. HKCD is now taking orders for such items as Conifers for Reforestation;  Trees and Shrubs for Wildlife; Blackberry, Blueberry, Raspberry and Strawberry Bushes; Apple, Cherry, Peach and Plum Trees; Native Wildflower Seed Packets and Native Wildflower Plants. HKCD will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 30, at the UPPCO Building in Houghton. more

Zoning expert to meet with Keweenaw County, Township officials Mar. 29

(Keweenaw Now file photo)EAGLE RIVER -- A top Michigan zoning expert who is assisting Keweenaw County officials in updating the County's 1975 Zoning Ordinance will hold two meetings on Monday, Mar. 29, to seek support for a grant application for funding the zoning update. Mark Wyckoff of Planning and Zoning Center, Inc., of Lansing, will meet with Keweenaw County township representatives at 2 p.m. at the Hut Restaurant in Kearsarge and with the County Zoning/Planning Commission at 7 p.m. at the Courthouse in Eagle River. The grant application to the Coastal Zone Management Program of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is due before the end of April. Wyckoff recently compiled responses to a zoning survey sent to the townships, adding his own comments on the Ordinance. County Commissioners and the public are also invited to attend the meetings. MTU International Club to host exotic cuisine, entertainment Mar. 26

MTU International Club Fashion Show 2003 (Photo © 2003 and courtesy MTU International Club)HOUGHTON -- Exotic regional cuisine, musical performances and martial arts demonstrations will highlight the 2004 Michigan Tech International Night on Friday, Mar. 26. Sponsored by the MTU International Club, the event will begin with dinner at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Commons, followed by cultural performances at 7:30 p.m. in the Rozsa Center. The Memorial Union will cater the dinner with exotic dishes from China, India, France, Nigeria and beyond. Performances include traditional and modern dances, singing, Wushu-Chinese martial arts, musical performances, skits and a fashion show by international students. The events are free and open to the public. more

Bottum University Center in Marquette. The week's events will include presentations, workshops, discussions and films dealing with various issues of global importance -- from the War on Iraq to Wind Energy -- culminating in Saturday's benefit concert. more

Peace groups to hold Walks for Peace, video showings Mar. 20, 21

(Keweenaw Now file photo)HOUGHTON, MARQUETTE -- Copper Country and Marquette peace groups plan events on Saturday, Mar. 20, and Sunday, Mar. 21, to commemorate the American and Iraqi lives lost over the past year. The Copper Country Peace Alliance is planning a walk starting at noon on Saturday, Mar. 20, at the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton. At 1:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Motherlode, there will be a showing of the video "Iraq, Emerging Voices," a film produced by the Mennonite Central Committee. The Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice will march on Saturday, Mar. 20, right after their regular 11:30 a.m. weekly post office vigil. more

UPEC, Eagle Alliance to hold public forums on U.P. sulfide mining plans

Reprinted with permission.)HOUGHTON -- The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition (UPEC) will hold an informational forum on sulfide mining at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 16, at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. UPEC is a member of the Eagle Alliance, a group of organizations and individuals concerned about protecting Michigan's waters against Acid Mine Drainage, a serious by-product of sulfide mining. Cynthia Pryor, executive director of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve and Eagle Alliance representative, will join UPEC resource persons at the forum to discuss concerns over Kennecott Mineral Explorations' potential nickel-copper mine on the Yellow Dog Plains above the headwaters of the Salmon Trout River in northern Marquette County. The Eagle Alliance will also hold a public forum in L'Anse at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 24, in the L’Anse Township Hall. more

Omphale to hold reception for "Exquisite Island" exhibit Mar. 12

(Reprinted with permission)CALUMET -- The Omphale Gallery will host a reception for "Exquisite Island," an exhibition of paintings on Isle Royale by jd slack and Terry Daulton, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 12. The exhibit of over 50 pastel paintings is the result of 18 days the two artists spent on Isle Royale in August 2003, as well as more recent work done from photographs and memory. Jennifer D. Slack was 2003 Isle Royale Artist in Residence, while Daulton, a pastel artist and wildlife biologist from Wisconsin, was her guest on the island. The paintings will be on exhibit through March and April at the Omphale, 431 Fifth Street, Calumet. Hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat. from noon to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the reception, which is open to the public.

Dance group to present The Metamorphosis Mar. 6, 7 at MTU

Reprinted with permission.)HOUGHTON -- The Metamorphosis, a new ballet produced by John Manno and choreographed by Donna Armistead and Jill Sajdyk, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 6, and at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 7, in the McArdle Theater, Walker Humanities Building, on the Michigan Tech campus. Based on seven myths gleaned from Ovid's classical text, the ballet features live musicians, locally composed songs and student dancers. The composers are Milton Olsson, Melvin Kangas, Robin Oye, Paul Seitz, Neil Paynter, Nathan Barber and Elizabeth Meyer. For details visit the Metamorphosis Web site.Link to another Web site.
