Gundlach Shelter Home to hold volunteer training Oct. 27, 28

(Photo by Emily Newhouse)CALUMET --  The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home for Abused Women will hold its next training session for volunteers from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 28. Volunteers are needed at the Shelter to help women and their children by being empathetic listeners and support persons. The Shelter honored survivors of domestic violence at their Oct. 13 Vigil and Candlelight Ceremony at St. Joseph Church in Lake Linden. Local peace groups to march against U.S. occupation of Iraq Sat., Oct. 25

HOUGHTON, MARQUETTE -- A group of concerned Copper Country citizens who strongly oppose the United States occupation of Iraq will march THIS Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at noon from the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton. Also on Oct. 25, the Marquette Citizens for Peace and Justice will will hold their regular Saturday vigil in front of the Marquette Post Office from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then march to the Harlow Park peace pole. Both local marches are in solidarity with national marches planned for Washington, D.C., and San Francisco this Saturday. These peace marches are intended to send a message to President Bush and Congress, letting them know how concerned citizens feel about the illegal, immoral and unjustified occupation of Iraq. more

Produced by Sevil Soyer, artist and advisor to the Gallery, the live performance will include an installation, poetry, music and special effects by seven artists from different disciplines. more

Blacksmith to demonstrate craft at Hancock Labyrinth Oct. 18

(Photo by Bill Sewell)HANCOCK -- Marquette area blacksmith Gordon Gearhart will be at the Hancock Labyrinth site from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, to demonstrate his craft. Gearhart will make hand-forged steel sign posts, which will complete the Labyrinth, a project which brought artists and community members together to build stone sculptures, a cob construction bench, gardens and walking paths on this site at the base of the Portage Lift Bridge next to the Ramada Inn. more

Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District to meet Oct. 18 in Copper Harbor

At the Houghton County Fair in August 2003, Sue Haralson, District administrator, and Jim Sweeting, forester/wildlife biologist, speak with a visitor at the HKCD booth. HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District (HKCD) will hold its 52nd Annual Meeting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Mariner North in Copper Harbor. A Smorgasbord Dinner will follow the meeting, with guest speakers Phyllis Green, superintendent of Isle Royale National Park, and Jim Rooks of Copper Harbor. Rooks will give a Slide Presentation of the Estivant Pines. Everyone is invited to attend. Tickets for the dinner are $15 per person and are available by calling the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District at 482-0214 by Wednesday, Oct. 15. Reservations are required. more

Democrats to hold local discussion group Oct. 15 at Motherlode

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton County Democratic Party will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton for its monthly discussion group-- an opportunity for participants to discuss issues and to share information and ideas in an informal setting. New members and those interested in learning more about the Democratic Party are invited to attend both the discussion group and the party's regular monthly meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the Super 8 Motel in Houghton. Eagle Harbor Township Board to meet Oct. 13

EAGLE HARBOR -- The Eagle Harbor Township Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in the Eagle Harbor Township Hall. New business includes a No Pets Policy, a Solid Waste Facility Policy and information on land acquisition grants. Read the agenda.

Shelter Home Ceremony to honor survivors of domestic violence Oct. 13

LAKE LINDEN -- A Candlelight Ceremony of music, poetry and speakers for survivors of domestic violence will be held beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at St. Joseph Church, 701 Calumet St., Lake Linden. After the ceremony the public is invited to join a walk through downtown to show support in mourning victims, celebrating survivors and reaffirming the struggle for a non-violent future. Please bring a candle or flashlight for the walk, which is sponsored by the Barbara Gundlach Shelter Home. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Copper Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited to meet Oct. 9 at Ottawa Sportsmen's Club

HOUGHTON -- The Copper Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Ottawa Sportsmen's Club, seven miles west of Baraga on Highway M-38, just past the intersection of Pelkie-Tapiola Road. The guest speaker will be Terry Morse, Supervisory Fisheries biologist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Marquette, Sea Lamprey Control Lab. Annual Solar Tour Oct. 4 exhibits local energy-efficient homes

Local residents will have an opportunity to visit buildings that use clean solar energy, such as the Kindred home at 1016 Crestwood Drive in Sylvan Estates, Hancock, where the tour will begin and maps will be available. Other energy-efficient homes in the Hancock, Houghton and Calumet area will also be open until 3 p.m. for the tour, which will feature such  energy options as passive solar; super-insulation; photovoltaics; radiant floor heating; hydroelectric; wind power; convection green house; and energy-efficient renovation of mining-era homes, including Copper Country Habitat for Humanity's latest project in Calumet Township.
