Volunteers needed for Keweenaw Coastal Cleanup Sunday, Sept. 21

(File photo by John Griffith)ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP -- The 2003 Michigan Coastal Cleanup and data collection will be held from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. Meet your Beach Captain at Black Creek, Gratiot River County Park, Gratiot River North, Seven Mile Point, Seven Mile Bay, Sunset Bay, or Eagle Harbor at 1 p.m. Bring gloves if possible. Trash bags will be provided. The North Woods Conservancy is the Michigan Coastal Cleanup Coordinator for the Keweenaw Peninsula. Data on debris collected is sent to the Ocean Conservancy, sponsor of the International Coastal Cleanup, which uses the data for educational purposes and government policy changes to solve the marine debris problem. Parade of Nations to be held Saturday, Sept. 20

(File photo by Michele Anderson)HOUGHTON -- Representatives from more than 80 countries plan to march in this year's "Space-Fest" Parade of Nations, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Hancock Middle School, crosses the Portage Lift Bridge and ends at Dee Stadium. Following the parade, international student groups from Michigan Tech University will be selling their native cuisine at Dee Stadium, where ethnic music and dance performances will provide afternoon entertainment. This year, youngsters can also enjoy free pony rides outside the Dee. Shuttle service for parade marchers is available from MTU's Memorial Union between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. See details on the MTU Web site. Link to another Web site.

"Matrices" by Daniel Boyer to open at Turquoise Gallery Sept. 19

(Image courtesy Turquoise Art Gallery)HANCOCK -- Turquoise Art Gallery will present ''Matrices,'' a solo exhibition of paintings, drawings and mixed-media works by Houghton artist Daniel C. Boyer, from Sept.19 to Oct. 13. Beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, a reception will be held in the Gallery. Boyer has had five solo exhibitions (including two in New York) and has been included in nearly 80 group exhibitions throughout the world (Russia, France, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Canada, Bulgaria). He has had several awards and honors and was included in the Web Biennial 2003 in Istanbul, Turkey. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, the Gallery is located in the E.L. Democrats to hold local discussion group Sept. 17 at Motherlode

HOUGHTON -- The Houghton County Democratic Party will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Motherlode Coffee House in Houghton for an informal discussion group. At its September meeting, party members voted to establish a monthly discussion group in addition to the regular monthly meetings  held on the first Monday of the month. The new group will allow local Democrats an opportunity to discuss issues and to share information and ideas in an informal setting. New members and those interested in learning more about the Democratic Party are invited to attend both the discussion group and the monthly meetings. Keweenaw County Board to consider zoning ordinance update proposals Tuesday, Sept. 9

EAGLE RIVER -- The Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday., Sept. 9, in the Courthouse in Eagle River. The date of the meeting has been changed so that commissioners may attend The Nature Conservancy - State of Michigan celebration of the Keweenaw Tip completion Wednesday (see below). On the agenda for this meeting are two proposals for updating the 1975 Keweenaw County Zoning Ordinance -- one by Mark Wyckoff, president of Planning and Zoning Center Inc. in Lansing, Mich., who conducted a Planning and Zoning Training Program for Keweenaw officials and residents last June, and one by Pat Coleman, president of U.P. Engineers and Architects.

Michigan officials, TNC to celebrate Keweenaw Tip completion

Aerial view of Keweenaw Point (Photo by Jeff Knoop)LANSING -- The Nature Conservancy (TNC)-Michigan Chapter will join state and local officials in celebrating the completion of the 6,275-acre Keweenaw Tip land purchase at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, on Brockway Mountain near Copper Harbor. At this event, TNC representatives will present the final half of a symbolic "Key to the Keweenaw" to state officials -- recognizing that this land will forever belong to the people of Michigan as a "last great place" open for hunting, fishing and hiking. more

"Echo" opens at Finnish-American Heritage Center Sept. 4

Echo - Inner Evolution, by Yueh-mei Cheng. 26"X26" Acrylic on Paper. 2002.HANCOCK -- "Echo -The Art of Yueh-Mei Cheng and Miao Lin" will be on exhibit at the Finnish American Heritage Center Gallery from Sept. 4 to Oct. 31. The opening reception will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4,  in the Gallery at 601 Quincy Street, Hancock. Cheng, a professor of drawing and painting at Finlandia University, will give a brief talk at the reception. Lin has taught at the Medical University of Shanghai for many years. He was also sponsored by the World Health Organization as a visiting scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Cheng and Lin are both internationally recognized artists who have employed meditation techniques to become inspired to create and open themselves to their subject. The reception is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Gallery hours are Mon. - Fri., 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Call 487-7376 for information.
