Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to hold meetings/hearings on draft General Management Plan Aug. 25-28

MARQUETTE -- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has released a draft General Management Plan/Wilderness Study/Environmental Impact Statement for
public comment, and will be holding meetings/hearings between Monday, Aug. 25,
and Thursday, Aug. 28, to obtain public input. In Marquette, an Open House on
the plan will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 25 in the Marquette Room, Northern Michigan University,
Don H. Bottum University Center. On Aug. 26, in Munising, an Open House will be
held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a Hearing on Wilderness from 7 p.m.
to 8 p.m. in the Munising Community Credit Union, 200 East M-28 in Munising. The comment period
is open through Oct. 31, 2003. For details on the plan, on how to submit written
comments and on meetings in Grand Marais, Lansing and Novi, see the National
Park Service (NPS) press release.
The 281-page draft GMP can be downloaded from the NPS
site.
Keweenaw Co-op to celebrate 30th birthday Aug. 23

HANCOCK --
The Keweenaw Co-op is hosting its 30th Anniversary Party on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the South Range Community Center. The party starts at
6 p.m. with a potluck and salsa contest. At 7:30 kick up your heels to music of the
Finn Woods Ramblers (with Johnny Perona on
bones), followed by Cry On Cue at about 9 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come Eat, Dance and Party all night! For more details call the Keweenaw Co-op at 482-2030. If you wish to volunteer to help before, during or after the party,

Ex Urban music venue to offer three shows Aug. 14, 15, 17

HOUGHTON -- The Ex Urban in Houghton welcomes songwriters, poets and musicians to an
OPEN MIC beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. Perform your thing in a professional venue! All Instruments and pro sound provided. $2 admission. On Friday, Aug. 15,
ERIK KOSKINEN will be performing songs from his great new album: "Sorrowville," produced by Spinout Records, with special guest Mike Fuller. Showtime Friday is 9 p.m. $5 admission. Returning to Houghton to play a special show in the Ex Urban
at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, are the members of SQUINT, with special
guests Emma and Ryan (From the "Misery Sessions 5" CD!).

Allouez Township Park
to be scene of Thimbleberry Jam Fest on Aug. 12

MOHAWK --
The Third Annual Thimbleberry Jam Fest will feature music, thimbleberries and art from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on
Tuesday, August 12, as Keweenaw County’s Far North Arts Alive Concert Series 2003 continues in Mohawk’s Allouez Township Park.
The LumberJanes -- a new female singer/songwriter collective with five harmonies, guitar and
percussion -- will be playing live from 5 to 6 p.m.; Traditional Irish music with Les Renczarski and Libby Meyer, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.; the Augustine Family Band, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.; and,
at 8 p.m., back by popular demand, the teen band, Blurred Thoughts. Thimbleberry-related products
and Keweenaw Krayons art will be available for purchase. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and maybe a picnic dinner and enjoy top notch local art and musical entertainment.
(Note: Singer Jan Arnold recently cancelled her performance scheduled for

EAGLE HARBOR -- The Eagle Harbor Township Board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m.
on Monday, Aug. 11, in the Community Building in Eagle Harbor. The Supervisor's
remarks and correspondence will include Land Updates; Water Committee meeting (10
a.m., Aug, 16); handouts on a Township Private Road Ordinance and an Enforcement Officer Ordinance; Fire Warnings;

Copper
Country Peace Alliance to hold Hiroshima memorial Aug. 10

HANCOCK --
The Copper Country Peace Alliance will sponsor a solemn gathering at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, in Porvoo Peace Park, Hancock, to remember the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, on August 6 and 9, 1945. The purpose of the gathering is to reflect on the tragedy of all wars, the use of nuclear weapons and their continued threat to the world. Participants may bring a reflection on peace, a poem, a song or a reading to share. Porvoo Peace Park, on the waterfront at the end of Tezcuco St., is named for Hancock's sister city in Finland to foster peace and communication between peoples and nations.
"Dream of Water" exhibit to open Aug. 8 at Turquoise Gallery

HANCOCK -- "The Dream of Water," an exhibit of ''Ebru'' (Marbling), by Turkish artist Hikmet Barutcugil, will be featured Aug. 8 to Sept. 8 at the Turquoise Art Gallery in Hancock. A reception,
with refreshments, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, opens the exhibit in the bright, spacious new gallery, located in Suite 305, E. L. Wright Building, 801 N. Lincoln Drive
(U.S. 41 in Hancock). The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
"Ebru," also known as "water surface painting," is a tasteful and mysterious art known to have started several centuries ago in Asia Minor.

WIS. -- The Lake Superior Alliance (LSA) will hold its 2003 Annual Conference and Meeting from Friday, Aug. 15, through Sunday,
Aug. 17, in Duluth, Minn. Under this year's theme, "Grassroots Prescriptions for Change," the conference will address water
quality monitoring and testing procedures within the Lake Superior basin. All interested parties are invited to attend this public conference. Visit the

Runeberg Hall offers smoke-free dance August 2

DOLLAR BAY -- Dance to swing, Latin, ballroom and country-western music on CDs
at Runeberg Hall in Dollar Bay. One more summer Saturday dance will be held from 8 p.m. to 11
p.m. on August 2. This new dance venue offers a non-smoking

MTU students to host 5th Annual International Festival of Foods Aug. 2

HOUGHTON -- The Daniell Heights / MTU Apartments 5th Annual International Festival of Foods will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the Daniell Heights Apartments park near building 2012.
Students from cultures all over the world will prepare some of their favorite, traditional recipes to
share with the community. The Daniell Heights / MTU Apartments complex is located behind Wadsworth Hall, just off MacInness Drive on the Michigan Tech campus. From Houghton, turn right off U.S. 41 at the traffic light and turn left at the first street. Follow the

Fort Wilkins programs offer living history, talks by experts, fun for
visitors

WILKINS -- This summer the visitors' programs at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, near Copper
Harbor, offer something for everyone in the family. July and August events
include costumed role players re-creating life in the 1870s and early 1900s and
a weekend Civil War encampment, as well as evening programs on Keweenaw history,
geology, wildlife, natural

Harbor to host "Reading the Landscape" summer program

HARBOR -- Eagle Harbor will host "Reading the Landscape," a summer
program of art and natural history field trips for adults 16 and older on two
more Saturdays, Aug. 2 and 9. Working with artists and
educators, participants use nature journals to record their reflections on
each field trip. Remaining sessions in the series are Animal Signs and Forest Ecology. Cost is $10 per session or $8 per
session if one signs up for at least four trips. Registration and advanced
