Eagle Harbor to host "Reading the Landscape" summer program

(File photo courtesy Gratiot Lake Conservancy)EAGLE HARBOR -- Eagle Harbor will host "Reading the Landscape," a summer program of art and natural history field trips for adults 16 and older on Saturdays: July 5, 12, 19, 26, and Aug. 2 and 9. Working with artists and educators, participants will use nature journals to record their reflections on each field trip. Sessions are Nature Journals, Water's Edge, Plant Community, Geology Walk, Animal Signs and Forest Ecology. Cost is $10 per session or $8 per session if one signs up for at least four trips. Keweenaw Krayons to hold Fish Boil, Garden Sculpture Contest June 29

Keweenw Krayons logo MOHAWK -- Keweenaw Krayons will sponsor the first annual Fish Boil and Garden Sculpture Contest beginning at noon on Sunday, June 29, at Allouez Township Park in Mohawk. Dinner will be served from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The menu includes a choice of boned cod, brats and hot dogs, potatoes, onion, coleslaw and rye bread -- all for $7. Tickets are available at the Ramblin' Rose Art Center in Mohawk. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and join in the festivities. Runeberg Hall offers smoke-free dances June 21, July 12, August 2

DOLLAR BAY -- Dance to swing, Latin, ballroom and country-western music on CDs at Runeberg Hall in Dollar Bay. Saturday dances will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on June 21, July 12 and August 2. This new dance venue offers a non-smoking environment and a great wood floor for dancing. From M-26 turn onto Main St. in Dollar Bay at Quincy's. Take the second right (Elm St.) at the statue. Runeberg Hall is the second building on the left (23259 Elm). Admission $3 a person. For more information contact dbach@portup.com.

Relay for Life to begin with Hancock-Houghton run for Cancer Society

(Photo by Laurie Curran) HOUGHTON -- A relay run from Hancock to Houghton starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 20, will kick off. the eighth annual, 24-hour Copper Country Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Escorted by Hancock and Houghton police, 17 runners will carry the Relay for Life flag to the Houghton High School track, where a variety of activities and ceremonies will honor cancer victims and survivors and raise awareness of cancer and the Society’s work. more

Robert Stottlemyer to address Keweenaw Land Trust June 19

HANCOCK -- "Global Climate Change as Opportunity" will be the subject of a presentation by Robert Stottlemyer at the Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT) annual meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at Michigan Tech's Noblet Forestry Building Auditorium. Stottlemyer, chief of the Reference Ecosystems Project in the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, will describe how "open space" initiatives, particularly on private lands, provide opportunities to protect water quality and species diversity. Stottlemyer is also a photographer and long-term researcher in National Parks. All are welcome to attend. Read more about the meeting and other KLT news on their updated Web site.

MDEQ to hold July 8 public hearing on permit for Houghton Wal-Mart Supercenter

LANSING -- The Geological and Land Management Division of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. on July 8, 2003, concerning the City of Houghton's application for a permit to relocate a portion of Old Huron Creek and the Huron Dam outlet, fill wetlands and create wetland mitigation off-site for the construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter at 1000 Razorback Drive. The hearing will be held at the Houghton City Council Chambers, 616 Shelden Avenue. Read the Public Notice.
