Help plant 5000 trees at Swedetown Trails Saturday, May 17

Posted 05/16/2003

Jon NeufeldCALUMET -- Jon Neufeld, president of the Copper Island Cross-Country Ski Club, reports the 5000 pine and spruce seedlings received through a state grant have arrived just in time for planting at Swedetown Trails in Calumet on Saturday, May 17. If you can help, show up at 9 a.m. at the chalet and carpool to the back of the Red Trail for some productive exercise. Shovels are available. Bring boots and gloves and, if possible, buckets. Lunch will be provided at 1 p.m. No bugs (yet). Trees are needed on this part of the Red Trail because of extensive logging and the high winds that knocked down 75% of the remaining trees, canceling the 2002 Great Bear Chase race. Signs will direct latecomers to another site where volunteers will be filling in seedlings from past plantings.
