Conservation District Tree Sale items still available

Houghton-Keweenaw Conservation District Board members wrap trees after the Tree Sale April 26. HOUGHTON -- Some surplus trees, shrubs, and other items left from the Houghton-Keweenaw Conservation District Tree Sale are available for sale as long as they last. For information call the District Office at 482-0214.

Walk for Peace to be held Saturday, Apr. 26

During windy Apr. 19 Walk for Peace in Hancock, participants take turns carrying sign, "IRAQ: US out UN in." HOUGHTON -- A Walk for Peace will be held again this Saturday, April 26, starting at noon from the Motherlode coffee house in Houghton. The Copper Country Peace Alliance (CCPA) continues its peace walks and vigils to attest that in the absence of social and economic justice for all, there can be no genuine peace or security for anyone. CCPA hosts a standing Vigil from noon to 1 p.m. during the week in front of the Houghton Post Office. For information on the Walk for Peace call 483-0581, and for more on the Vigil call 483-3183.

Earth Day youth projects invited to "make a difference"

Western UP Center logo HOUGHTON -- Students and youth groups are invited to participate in the second annual “Kids Can Make a Difference” Earth Day Program. Sponsored by the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education and the Wege Foundation, this program offers prizes for youth projects that benefit a school or local community. Despite this and many other great programs for kids, state budget cuts could eliminate the entire Western UP Center and its programs. Parents can help by writing to legislators. more 

Stupak to host town meeting in Calumet Tuesday, Apr. 22

U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) will host a town hall meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 PM EDT on Tuesday, Apr. 22, in the multi-purpose room at Calumet Public School, 57070 Mine St., Calumet. Stupak will be traveling through the Upper Peninsula from April 21 through April 28, 2003, to host town hall meetings, listen to constituents and meet with community groups. Walk for Peace to be held Saturday, Apr. 19; Vigil to continue Apr. 21-25

HOUGHTON -- "There should never be joy in killing or war" will be the theme of the April 19 Walk for Peace, sponsored by the Copper Copper Country Peace Alliance (CCPA). Walkers should gather at noon outside the Motherlode Coffeehouse in Houghton. The Walk is a way for local citizens to support non-violent, diplomatic solutions to the growing conflict between the United States and Middle East governments. CCPA will also host a standing Vigil from noon to 1 p.m. during the week of April 21-25 in front of the Houghton Post Office. Runeberg Hall offers smoke-free dances April 19, May 10

DOLLAR BAY -- Dance to swing, Latin, ballroom and country-western music on CDs at Runeberg Hall in Dollar Bay. Two more Saturday dances will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on April 19 and May 10. This new dance venue offers a non-smoking environment and a great wood floor for dancing. From M-26 turn onto Main St. in Dollar Bay at Quincy's. Take the second right (Elm St.) at the statue. Public hearings on land use to be held in Marquette Apr. 21

LANSING -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm's recently appointed Michigan Land Use Leadership Council invites Upper Peninsula citizens who care about land use decisions to attend public hearings from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 21, in Marquette. The hearings will be in the Brule Room (2302) of the Don H. Bottum University Center at Northern Michigan University. The Michigan Land Use Institute (MLUI) encourages citizens in all walks of life to speak out at these hearings for thriving cities without sprawl, transportation choices, prosperous farms and refreshing natural spaces. Rep. Rich Brown to hold office hours in Eagle River Apr. 16

Michigan Rep. Rich Brown (D-Bessemer) LANSING -- State Representative Rich Brown (D-Bessemer) will hold office hours to meet with constituents from 10 a.m. - noon on Wednesday, Apr. 16, at the Keweenaw County Courthouse in Eagle River. "I encourage people to come and discuss issues with me that are important to them. Hearing directly from people about what is important enables me to better represent the interests of the Western U.P. in the Legislature, as well as using the resources of my office to help make dealing with any of our state departments quicker and easier," Brown said.

No appointment is necessary, but if people have questions they may call Rep. Brown's Lansing office at 1-888-663-4031.

Conservation District Tree Sale items available Apr. 25, 26

(Photo  courtesy  and © 2002 Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District) HOUGHTON -- The trees and other items ordered from the Houghton - Keweenaw Conservation District's 2003 Tree Sale will be available for pick-up from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, in the UPPCO Building garage, located on the east end of the building, facing the Dee Stadium. Surplus trees, shrubs, fruit trees and berry bushes will be for sale on these days. Questions? Call Sue Haralson at the District Office at 482-0214.

(Nov. 2001 Keweenaw Now file photo) HANCOCK -- "Boiling Water in Fronterizo" will be the subject of a talk and slide presentation by Sue Ellen Kingsley of the Copper Country Guatemala Accompaniment Project (CCGAP) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Hancock. CCGAP has been helping sister community Fronterizo 10 de Mayo to acquire large pots needed for boiling drinking water. The evening will start with a Lenten soup and bread supper. Peace Alliance to hold Walk for Peace April 5

"Support the soldiers: Bring them home alive without further loss of life" will be the theme of this Saturday's Walk, sponsored by the Copper Country Peace Alliance. After the Walk, an informal round-table discussion will be held at the Motherlode, starting about 1:15 p.m. The public is invited. For more information, call 284-0581.
