Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District holds annual Tree Sale

HOUGHTON -- Next Tuesday, April 1, is the deadline for ordering plants through the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District's annual
Tree Sale. The District is currently accepting orders on Conifers, Trees and Shrubs for Wildlife, Berry Bushes, Fruit Trees, Native Wildflowers Seeds and Plants and Conservation Merchandise.

Peace Alliance to hold Walk, discussions

HOUGHTON -- "Support Democracy -- Walk For Peace" will be the theme of the Saturday, March 29, Walk, beginning at noon from the Motherlode in Houghton. After the
Walk, at about 1:15 p.m., an informal round-table discussion will be held at the Motherlode. Peace Vigils are now held every day of the week at noon in front of the U.S. Post Office in Houghton. The Copper Country Peace Alliance, sponsor of these events, will host a gathering and talking circle to provide an opportunity for sharing thoughts and feelings about the invasion of Iraq at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, in Room 116 Walker on the MTU campus, next to the Rozsa Center. The public is invited to these events. For more information call 284-0581.

Environmental Historian to speak at MTU Monday, March 24

HOUGHTON -- Environmental historian, Dr. Carolyn Merchant, Chancellor's Professor of
Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California -
Berkeley, will speak on "Partnership Ethics: Humanity and the Environment"
at 7 p.m. in Fisher 139 on the Michigan Tech campus. Dr. Merchant is the
author of The Death of Nature: Women, Ecology, and the Scientific Revolution
(1980), Ecological Revolutions: Nature, Gender, and Science in New England (1989),
Earthcare: Women and the Environment (1996); The Columbia Guide to American Environmental History
(2002) and many other publications. Part of the Eco-Lit Group series of visiting

Peace Alliance to hold Walk
for Peace, discussion March 15

HOUGHTON -- "We support our troops. Let's keep them alive" will be the
theme of the Walk for Peace on Saturday, March 15, beginning at noon from the
Motherlode Coffeehouse in Houghton. Following the Walk, at about 1:15 p.m.,
interested persons are welcome to join a roundtable discussion at the Motherlode.
On Saturday, March 8, women wearing pink ribbons joined the Walk for Peace in
honor of International Women's Day. more

HOUGHTON--"Millions of people - and many nations -- are saying NO to a unilateral, preemptive attack on Iraq" will be the theme of the Walk for Peace on Saturday, Mar. 8, starting at noon from the Motherlode Coffeehouse in Houghton. Sponsored by the Copper Country Peace Alliance, the Walk is one way for local citizens to demonstrate their support for a non-violent, diplomatic solution to the conflict between the U.S. and Iraqi governments. Runeberg Hall offers smoke-free dances March 8, April 19, May 10

DOLLAR BAY -- Dance to swing, Latin, ballroom and country-western music on CDs
at Runeberg Hall in Dollar Bay. Saturday dances will be held from 8 p.m. to 11
p.m. on March 8, April 19 and May 10. This new dance venue offers a non-smoking
environment and a great wood floor for dancing. From M-26 turn onto Main St. in
Dollar Bay at Quincy's. Take the second right (Elm St.) at the statue. Runeberg
Hall is the second building on the left (23259 Elm). Admission $3 a person. For

Swedetown Trails to host Great Bear Chase races
March 7-9

CALUMET -- The 23rd Annual Great Bear Chase, scheduled for Sunday, March 9, 2003, will offer a weekend of events for skiers of all ages at Calumet's Swedetown Trails.
Besides Sunday's 25 Km classic, 25 Km freestyle race and 50 Km freestyle race, skiers 16 and under can enjoy the Junior Bear Chase Kids' Races on Saturday, March 8. The
new Bear Scat Sprint for all ages kicks off the weekend on Friday night, March 7, offering 1 Km uphill-downhill lighted night skiing in a loop near the Chalet.

Karelian Ensemble to perform at Finnish Mardi Gras March 4

HANCOCK --
From the land of the Kalevala, the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble returns to Hancock for a Mardi Gras coffee house and concert on Tuesday, Mar. 4, at the Finnish American Heritage Center. The Karelian Coffee House begins at 6 p.m., and the concert at 7 p.m.
The lively, humorous trio delights audiences with a mix of traditional Finnish, Karelian and Russian folk melodies.
